Hi Guys,

New to the forum and need help.

Several days ago I started getting a hardware malfunction BSOD. At first it was occassional but now it is up for only a few minutes. Doesn't matter if I am in safe mode or not. I googled and ended up checking memory and my hard drive but both tested fine. I am attaching the minidump. I have been unable to keep it up long enough to run the BSOD.exe file you recommend.

I am running:
- Windows 7 Ultimate x64
- original OS was XP. Did a clean install.
- retail version
- installed 1 year ago
- system is 3 years old

Thanks and have a great day!!

Welcome!

Since the problem exists in Safe Mode, it does sound like a hardware issue.

I'm not sure what you used to test memory, but please follow this tutorial: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/105647-ram-test-memtest86.html

What are the system specs of that machine?

I see an outdated ASACPI.sys driver, which is a well-known cause of BSODs. Go here: support.asus.com/download/download.aspx?SLanguage=en-us

Input your motherboard model, and in the Utilities section, you should see an ATK 0110 Driver for WindowsXP/Vista/Win7 32&64-bit . Download that to a USB drive, and then install it on the BSODing machine.

Also, to make sure it is hardware. Download a copy of Ubuntu Live CD, and burn the ISO to a CD using ImgBurn or your favorite image-burning program.

Boot from the CD, and if it crashes, we know for sure it is hardware-related.

Thanks Lancaster! That was a very quick response.

I used used the same memory test from the ultimate boot CD but it only hit 5 iterations overnight. I have started it again and we'll see what happens.

I have updated my system specs in my profile so hopefully they will show up now.

I was afraid that it was really a hardware issue when it did it in safe mode as well.

Another thing I forgot to mention on the original post, it is also giving me a warning on bootup that the CPU has been changed and to enter BIOS and update the info. Does this even after goining into BIOS and saving on exit.

I have gone to the ASUS website. They dont give me an option for Windows 7 under OS for my MB. What shows up is: ACPI driver for ATK 0110 virtual device version 1043.2.15.37 for Windows 2000 / XP (32bit and 64bit) / 2003 (32bit & 64bit) / VISTA (32bit & 64bit). My P5N32-E SLI is not listed under Windows 7 supported boards.

Might be time to get a new mainboard.

I will be going out of town for a couple of weeks and will give Ubutu a try when I get back.

Thanks again and have a great day!!

Go ahead and install the ATK driver, even though it's for Vista. At least it's dated 2007, and not 2006.

If you are planning on buying a new motherboard anyway, let's wait for that. If not, let's see the results of Ubuntu, and go from there.

I tried to install the ATK driver and it wont let me. I get the message that it does not support the OS WNT_6.1P_64_MCE.

I am going to be out of town for about 2 weeks now. I will try Ubuntu when i get back.

Made it back home early. Have to leave again Sunday morning. But I did manage to burn an Ubuntu CD while I was out. I chose the run without installing option and have been running for the last 2 hours with no issues. I could only keep it up for minutes before. Does this mean it is not a hardware issue? So what now?

That makes it sound like a software problem. However, booting from a Live CD also eliminates hard drive. The OS is loaded into RAM from the CD.

Safe Mode makes it sound like a hard drive issue, as does the fact that the problem started in slowly, and got worse.

Try testing your hard drive again. What program did you use? See here: HD Diagnostic

Also, check for bad sectors on your C drive. Open an elevated command prompt and enter chkdsk /r. Reboot, and let the scan complete.

When it's done, go to Start>eventvwr.msc>Windows Logs>Application Logs. Sort the list by Source, and paste the results found in Wininit to your next post.

I had tested it with Spinrite level 4. I am now trying the Hitachi diagnostic from the Ultimate Boot CD while I download the the ones from the link you provided.

Just wanted to give you guys an update. Ubuntu started to lock up and not install while I was switching things around to test the hard drive. Now I can only get a successful POST about half the time. I took things apart and found some pregnant caps. So I guess I am out to get a new MOBO after all. Maybe later I will try to replace the caps and see if i can get it working again.

Found a refurbed Striker II Formula that looks good.

Thanks for all the help!!

Thanks for the update!

Good work detecting those "pregnant" capacitors. Hope the new one does the trick!
