Hardware Upgrade 7, Is Good?

Motherboard X59A-UD3R
Processor: Intel Core i7 930 @280Ghz (8CPU) ~2.8GHz
Video Card: Nvidia GeForce GTX460
Power Supply: 750 Watts

Now I was looking at upgrading and wanted to know if this is better as I'm still new at all of this stuff
Case:CM Storm Scout Gaming Case SGC-2000-KKN1-GP
Motherboard ASUS P6T SE Core-i7 Motherboard
Processor: Intel Core i7 920 or CPU Intel Core2 Quad Q9400
Video Card: Something better but don't know yet.
Power Supply: 750 Watts

So my question is there a lot of stuff here and I'm trying to make sure I have it right can anybody give a little light on if this is okay or bad then what I have.

Going from a i7 930 to Q9400 would be a backwards step. They came out in 2010 and 2008 respectively. Actually I upgraded FROM a Q9400 to a i7 930 several years ago and noticed a boost in performance. The 930 is 1st generation - Intel are now on the 4th gen. I still use the 930 and, as well as being slower than the newer versions, it runs kinda hot when overclocked (80C). My advice is have a look at the latest Intel chips.

I was looking at getting something newer but not state of the art new. How about something like 2011 and so on? My core is going that why I ask. Not looking for something that cost a bunch but just something that will be better then what I have and keep me up and running.

I use a 2600K (2nd gen 2011) as my main workhorse (overclocked to 4.6GHz). Its a couple of years old, but is very powerful and has been excellent value for money. I also have a i7 3770 (3rd gen) - same applies.

Sticking with a 1366 chip and a X58 board is old and costly.

Compare with my older cpu i7-960 which still works great but if I was going to upgrade it would be with one of Intel's new chips. (cpu) I would also wait for more reviews on the new Haswell from Intel.

Just spoken to the person I get stuff from he has Intel Core i7-3820 Sandy Bridge-E 3.6GHz (3.8GHz Turbo Boost) LGA 2011 130W Quad-Core Desktop Processor BX80619i73820 - Newegg.com and motherboard P9X79 WS - Motherboards - ASUS going for 540.00 think it a good deal?

What do you do/plan to do with your pc? Gaming, video editing, or just web surfing and making the odd DVD? I do a lot of 3D design + movie rendering, so I need multi-cores. Other people on this forum can advise on a gaming rig.

Sort of all really. I play WoW and other games, I record a podcast and do video editing. I try my hand at 3D software so it all in between.

higher is better. For gaming the graphic card is important. Not my thing but others here can help re gfx.

'sort of all really' - my mate used to work in a guitar shop and the 1st question he'd ask a customer was 'what kind of stuff are you into' ie jazz, metal, country etc. When they replied 'well, sort of everything' his heart would sink. Then he'd sell them a Strat copy.

For a cpu and motherboard that will do what ever you ask of it I like your choice.
Very solid choice for someone that uses a computer for everything.

If it was my computer I would use a very hight quality cpu cooler.

I would also recommend Windows 7/64

Their are many, one just has to do a little shopping and looking at reviews.
