Solved Has anybody ever use such a cable

I was wondering whether this cable (or similar) is any good for attaching an external SSD. Does it work as good as a caddy ?

As long as it is connected to a USB 3.0 port, it should work fine. Even a USB 2.0 port should work for a SSD. A spinner would be iffy at best on USB 2.0 since USB 2.0 has less power available.

Note that the cable isn't sold by NewEgg and apparently is being shipped from Asia.

Take a look at this one, Wolfgang. It's sold directly by Amazon and gets decent reviews. A SSD should get plenty of power whether it is used in a USB 3.0 or 2.0 port; a spinner would be really iffy.

Since it draws power from two USB ports, this one will have enough power to work in USB 2.0 or USB 3.0 to handle any 2.5" drive although it will run at no more than USB 2.0 speeds. It also gets decent reviews. Even though it is sold by an Amazon Marketplace vendor, it is fulfilled by Amazon which means it ships from an amazon warehouse and Amazon will stand behind the sale.

I use a couple of USB 2.0 docks that is similar for 2.5" drives with my notebook. The notebook only has USB 2.0 ports so I have to use the double ended cable it comes with to ensure spinners will get enough power to work with it. An SSD can run with only one connection, though. I like them because I'm not comfortable with just plopping a drive down on the desk. They have a little base that swings out to keep them from tipping over and the dock and cable will fit in a little travel type soap box.

A cable like that should work the same as a caddy or enclosure that's USB connected. 2.5" drives use 5V while 3.5" use 12V, USB supplies 5V with USB3.0 having a bit higher current.

1. I want an unpowered one - only power from the USB3 port
2. Two USB cables don't work because I have only 1 port.
3. I have plenty of docks - in fact the SSD is in a dock right now. But I thought for travel a cable would be less bulk.

No. I personally don't like the idea of using a cable only but that's my personal prejudice (or is it paranoia? Both?). The reviews are good enough, if I needed to have one, I would feel comfortable trying it.

It's only for when we go on the road. I want to reduce bulk. It would be used very rarely because the SSD is only for images and file backup.

If I ever can get an imaging program to work properly with the micro SDXC card, then I would not even need it. But that's another story.

I understand. I'm able to fit both of my little docks in my notebooks carrying case (barely) but they probably wouldn't work for you.

It's curious that imaging programs wouldn't work with micro SDXC cards. Mayhap if they were reformatted to NTFS?

Nah, for Macrium, there is apparently a driver problem in the WinPE. Works fine from the installed program but not with the WinPE. With the SSD everything works.

With AOMEI, it's a real mess. I cant even make an image - regardless what device. That may have to do with the 32bit Windows 8.1 on the system. In post 1440 of this link are the details.

I have a Seagate FreeAgeny portable drive that can be upgraded with the cables. I use my cable with SSDs all the time and it works great. Never had a problem except the computer recognizes the cable but not the drive, which bever had any affect on anything. I'm sure you can find one easy enough, it's a USB 3.0 upgrade cable for the Seagate FreeAgent.

I've been using the KingWin adp07 for several months, works with both usb2 and 3. Very good usb 3 speeds, those speeds are dependent on what usb 3 chip set you have. I'm satisfied with the KingWin products I have. I recently added a KingWin Dock/rack KF-253-BK and pleased with it's performance.

I have loads of them in my server =) basically mounted several usb hubs inside the case with these plugged in, so can add as many hard drives as I wish inside them. I use usb 2 so dont get super fast speeds, but I dont care for backing up as I just drag and drop and walk away.
