I don't know why some people have such trouble with Update. My approach has been to install only security and office updates. I don't use IE so I quit updating that as well. And of course I have update settings at "never check for updates." I run my own manual check after Patch Tuesday. I watch this forum and study the lists. And I installed the GWX app. I have never had any W10 related files install. On another computer in the house, W10 did manage to download, but I promptly got rid of it with GWX. And even on that computer, there have been no problems since. I don't get why people have such a problem with this. There must be something else going on with their computer.

Same way you did when win-10 downloaded would be my guess

I learned a long time ago if you don't want Recommended updates uncheck the option so they are not mixed up with real important updates

I believe it was Windows live essentials 2011 that woke me up

It is dire but not hopeless. If you inspect ALL updates before you apply them - if any - then you may keep your Win7 clean.
