I don't know if anyone else has seen or posted it but I found this Computers on a stick (finally) | TechRepublic

now sounds all hunky dory but how easy it it going to be to pinch it, put it through the wash, or simply just misplaced??

afaik flash drives easily survive washing. As long as they are dried well before being used anyway.

Losing it might very well be a major issue though.

Given the purposes they talk about in the article, I strongly disagree.
There is no chance in heck that companies will start issuing this over laptops, as the "clunker" as they call it is a device they know that works with the stuff they want it to work with, while whatever each user bought for their own use may or may not work and may or may not have compatibility problems and/or driver issues.
Especially since Windows 8 still sucks b**** and there are so little machines that support it natively (bulk are Windows 7 or older and lack drivers for 8).

Seriously, does the writer expect that all the hardware people bought for their use works 100% with 8 out of the box?
Who does all the troubleshooting? What happens if the hardware cannot be troubleshooted over the internet?
DO you ask the user to bring his stuff to the company and leave it there an unspecified amount of time?
Or worse, you you ask the user to cough up the money for a device that works with 8 out of the box?

I question his IT experience. OR I don't like the implications (shifting all costs on the user).

All sounds wonderful in theory, yet this technology has a stronger presence in the realm of marketing literature than real-world experience at this point. Questions ranging from how these computers on a stick can be remotely wiped, to how an IT department manages, tracks, and licenses tiny, cheap USB keys loaded with high value corporate assets abound. However, this seems a worthwhile technology to watch and experiment in as part of a more general Windows 8 pilot.

He does raise the questions I had here. It'll likely be ignored by most IT people and companies and will be a kid's toy.

Managing hardware compatibility, security, and I.T. Department help when needed would be out of the question to most. Network and domain setup would be a real joy.

To me it sounds like a good product for Toys R Us.

Having people bring their own hardware doesn't sound like a good idea.
Hell you can't get them to bring their own coffee or their own pen to wright with.

Yep another thing that crossed my tiny mind too Bear was it makes you wonder what they can remove from anywhere using one of these devices.

It is getting to be a bit Maxwell Smart sort of a turn out eh?

Linux has been doing that for ages.
