Solved Have I killed my laptop?

Hum well I think I just killed my lappy I cleaned it all up even tried a a better i5 in in but power on and the opto clunks clunks and the fan runs slow for a bit then races up to fast then stops altogether.
So thinking it might be just the new core being a dud stuck the original one back in - same result so don't know where to start even looking?

There is no screen at all and I have checked and rechecked now several times carefully following the dissemble info

Any ideas anyone?

Have you tried resetting the BIOS? Anytime you change a processor you need to reinitialize the 'CMOS' checksum.

Laptops present a special challenge in that they do not offer a CLRTC jumper.
But you can try:

• PC off
• Remove battery and power supply
• Remove 3v battery on the motherboard
• Press and hold power button for 20 seconds or so
• Replace all and boot

See if that changes anything

Generally, it's not advisable to swap processors in a laptop, unless it was designed for that sort of thing. While you are in checking on the 3V battery, make sure there's no damage to the socket or any debris, thermal paste, etc in or around the socket.

Ok will check for forgotten leads then move on from there. The battery os soldered in and I am pretty sure the CPU socket was clear but I will check I have the original CPU back in although I think the board supports then other one if I can get it going again might just leave it out.

It was just the beckoning of a better turbo speed that prompted me really as the 430M was only 0.26 behind in GHz to start with.

Ok machine running again I dissembled it right back to checking the pins on the core - none bent or damaged no debris so redone the thermal slipped a different stick of RAM in it left out the opto drive and put it all back together again making absolutely sure of the connections - well up to where I could switch it on and low and behold it fired up as usual.

I put back all the old RAM - I have 8GB in it - I know another overkill person - fired up again and back to it's old self. Now I am going to wait until I can afford one of those 3rd gen Intel machines before I try going faster again. Thats going to take a while "Big Bad Betty" is taking shape so is demanding most of my time now LOL!!

Now I didn't think about the change in BIOS TV as well I had no screen to do it anyway - but point taken thank you.

Meant to add if nothing else I have knocked off nearly 10C form the running temp so alls well down under
