Solved Have to select user upon startup, and after locking. Single User

I have to select a user upon startup of Windows instead of have just being prompted for a password as per usual of having one user. Same deal when locking. Any ideas?

If you have to select a user's icon at the log on screen, then what other user's icon is displayed to select from if you only have a single user account on the computer?

....or do you mean that you have to enter both the user name and password at log on instead of just the password?

That's the weird part, there are no other users to select from, and I am set as the default user according to my registry in winlogon... Yet I still have to click my user icon. I would do auto logon... but I prefer the security.

I'm afraid that I may not be understanding you properly.

If there is only your user account displayed at log on, then what do mean that you have to select your user account? As opposed to what I guess I'm asking.

Oh, sorry I must have not explained it. Instead of just being immediately prompted for a password as per usual on my other windows 7 machines, you have to click on the user icon. Same for locking, it doesn't bring up the selected user and ask for a password. It brings up the smaller icon that you have to click

Double check in User Accounts -> "Manage another account" from the Control Panel to see if you may have any other user account listed other than yours and the turned off Guest account. If you do not have any other user account's than those two, then as a test to see if you may be able to toggle this back try the below.

• Create a new user account, and log on to it.
• Log off the new user account, and log on to your administrator account.
• Delete the new user account.
• Click on "Switch user" in the Start Menu power button menu to see if you still have the small icon, or hopefully the large icon back.

Other than setting Windows 7 to require you to enter both a user name and password at log on instead, I'm not sure what else to suggest to get only the single larger user icon back at log on.

Did this just recently started to happen on this computer, or was it always like this? If just recently, then you might see if doing a system restore using a restore point dated before this started may be able to undo and fix this.

Is this a local user account, or part of a domain?

It's a local user account, and I just restored my lappy like two days ago, so I couldn't really tell you if it was ever working correctly on this install. It was two days of restoring folders, updating and fiendishly reinstalling programs.

I'm just going to use Auto-Logon, which strangely enough does the same thing, I have to click on it. But then I set it in Windows 7 Manager and ticked force auto-logon and I didn't have to. I never have my lappy out of my sight anyways, its always in use. Thanks for the help Brink.

You might check to see if some setting in the "Windows 7 Manager" program may be responsible for this.

I did, I looked pretty thoroughly, I feel like something in the registry just got tweaked and didn't get readjusted when I disabled it in win7manager. Oh well, auto-logon is super nifty especially since my lappy uses lenovo's rapiddrive technology, 20 second cold boot to desktop = bliss.

1. Click on Start and then enter the following command in the search box:
   netplwizPress the ENTER key.
   This command will load the Advanced User Accounts Control Panel applet.
2. In the Users tab, uncheck the box next to Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer.
3. Click on the Apply button at the bottom of the User Accounts window.
4. When the Automatically Log On dialog box appears, enter the user name you wish to automatically login to Windows 7 with. Then enter your account password in the two fields where it's asked.
   Click the OK button.
5. Click OK on the User Accounts window to complete the process.
   From now on, when your PC starts up, Windows 7 will log on automatically.

See if this will work.
Also, in your screen saver settings, make sure you have display logon screen unchecked.

thanks, AddRAM but I am not looking for a way to bypass the whole login process. The problem I'm experiencing is the same as indicated by KillerHonky above....

I have no other user accounts on my machine, have cleaned up the ProfileList entries in the registry but still the issue remains.

Then there is another user account on your system that although is hidden from the welcome screen it is making you Select your Username before you type in the password. I have seen this with some Net framework updates that put a second user on the system. Further updates remove it so make sure you have all updates installed.

@AddRAM - only my current account and the Guest account, which is disabled.

Some additional information....I am using PGP Desktop so I enter a passphrase on boot and it takes me directly into Windows without the login screen. The issue I describe above occurs only after initial login on my machine when I lock and then CAD to unlock the machine. If, for example, I select Log Off, then log back in with my password, and then lock and unlock, I do not have to click the smaller icon first and then enter my password -- I go directly to the password entry screen. Bizarre, right?

I'd be inclined to say that PGP Desktop is (partily) to blame; however, this problem cropped up ONLY after I logged out of my machine and logged back in for the first time after receiving this machine brand new and re-imaged.
