Solved Have to troubleshoot internet every time I turn on my computer

So as the title suggests, I've been having this problem for years on my computer in which every time I turn it on, it has trouble connecting to the internet and the wifi symbol on the bottom right-hand side of the screen has that little yellow star indicating that my internet is not working at all. This then forces me to have to 1. attempt to connect to the internet 2. wait for the 'Windows cannot connect to this network' popup 3. and then click the troubleshooting option until I can connect to ANY network.

I've tried resetting my router/modem multiple times, and tried to connecting to other networks with the same issue. My home network is completely fine as it works on other devices, this issue I believe is purely an issue with my wireless adapter or computer settings. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Wireless Adapter Model: Netgear A6200

Also the troubleshooting diagnostics say the issue was 'Problem with wireless adapter or access point'

Hi henrypayne, welcome to the Forum.

Just so we can get an idea of your set up, what sort of router/modem are you using & is it mobile broadband, cable connected or through the NBN.

Can we assume that the router/modem is remote from your computer & you are using the Netgear A6200 to connect to the modem's WiFi using the A6200. Does the A6200 need a driver to be installed. You could open Device Manager from Control Panel & see if the A6200 is listed & if it is does it have any yellow flash that indicates it's not working properly.

Hi Ranger,

The modem I am using is a Netgear CG3100D (Telstra Issued) which is connected to my D-Link DIR-895L Router. The modem is using cable and the A6200 does not have any warning or yellow signs in device manager. I will update its drivers and see if there is any resolution there, but assume there isn't unless I reply otherwise.

Thanks!

This website might help with setting up WiFi for the Netgear CG3100D.

Setup WiFi on the Netgear CG3100D-2

Have you tried just connecting the A6200 by WiFi directly to the CG3100D. I am not an expert on WiFi but from what I understand the WiFi device in question has to be detected by the host unit or it wont work.

So I messed around with the drivers a little bit and re-installed the ones I had to bring them to the current version. It has now created different kinds of problems. Instead of the symbol in the bottom right-hand side of the screen appearing with the yellow star, it now appears with the red cross. This confused me because when I click on the icon, all the normal networks come up and I can connect to all of them. Another problem is that when I do attempt to connect to a network, it either asks me for a password (when I already have it saved) or says that windows cannot connect to that network (sometimes both happens and it is really frustrating). It usually takes a couple of tries reconnecting before it works. On top of all this, sometimes when I launch my computer, none of these issues arise and the computer connects to the internet as normal.

Any help is appreciated

As you occasionally get a problem free start up of the computer, it might be worth looking at whether the WiFi signal is being blocked by something, such as another radio transmitting device interfering with the signal.

When you have a yellow or red star in the internet icon at the bottom RH corner of the screen, just bring the pointer of the mouse over it, don't click anything & it will say something like "Network 1 internet access" or "Network 1 no internet access". This can mean that the modem has not connected or is not being recognised.

The host modem router set up has to recognise the A6200, so have you checked to see if that is the case.

I had the issue this morning and I held my cursor over the yellow star and it simply said 'Not Connected, Connections Available' but I still had to go through the process of connecting, putting in the network password and troubleshooting before I was able to connect.

I have also noticed that my computer won't allow me to join to some networks because they are considered 'hidden networks'. After I connect to a regular network, I connect to the hidden networks fine, just something i've noticed.

Cheers for any help

I still think your problems are caused by not getting all the set up settings exactly right. As I have mentioned the router has to be able to recognise the A6200 & a connection made for reliable operation.

I've left this issue up in the air for a while and I am glad to say that by only natural means, the issue seems to have gone away. There is the odd time when I have to troubleshoot to connect to the internet, but that is only about 1/20 times. Thank you for your continued support Ranger, your advice has definitely contributed to this solution.

Thanks for getting, hopefully it stays working properly. You are welcome, but my support was fairly limited.
