Solved Having Black Screen with cursor just before the desktop loads

Hi all, few days earlier I fresh installed my Windows 7 Ultimate (x64) and also downloaded Service pack 1 update,it was working fine.My pc was booting normally and fast also.But on last 19th of September few windows update got downloaded and installed.While most of them were security update for Microsoft .Net framework 4 client profile and .Net framework 4 extended,some of them also included updates for Microsoft Windows.After having done with the installation it prompted to restart the PC to complete the installation procedure and apply those updates,so I did.Since then I have been experiencing Black screen with moving cursor during booting just before the desktop loads.
Actually I am having the black screen twice during booting.First during the interval when the Microsoft logo disappears and Welcome screen shows up right there.the black screen is staying bit longer(for 5 to 7 seconds)unlike before.Second time is after I enter the password and just before the desktop loads.
Earlier the desktop used to load with the icons and clock(gadget) altogether,but now after I'm done with entering my password the Welcome screen keeps on buffering for too long(9 to 12 seconds) and then black screen appears comes up first,then gradually desktop background comes first,followed by icons,after 5 or 6 second the clock shows up.

Although the black screen is not causing any major trouble in system performance but still it's annoying to see it each time Windows loads.So I seek for some help from you people.

Perhaps System Restore to before that set of updates first. Then install updates selectively until you find the offending one. It may even go through problem free.

Also possible your security software is interfering.

Hi GokAy,first of all thanks for your reply.Now coming to the things you mentioned.

I tried the System Restore utility to restore my PC to a date before 19th September(when from I started having the Black Screen trouble),but within the list of restore points it's not showing any date before the above mentioned date.All restore points listed there are after 19th September.So I did not launch the System restore. I've not tried the clean startup yet,just going through the link you posted about it.
I've Avast as my antivirus and a program called "Advanced System Care version 8.2" that scans for issues like registry fragmentation,security issues,disk optimization,junk files cleaning,shortcut fix.It actually downloaded those Windows updates and installed while scanning and fixing few security issues which it found the last time it was launched i.e. 19th September.

However I did try the sfc /scannow command using elevated command prompt.After the scan it came up with a message "sfc /scannow detected some corrupt files.. unable to fix" with a path pointing to the location of the CBS.log file generated during the scan. I am enclosing the CBS.log file for your convenience.I would request you to have a look at it,if you can find any culprit from it.

IObit programs can cause issues, we usually ask to uninstall it. You can search the forums for the many cases they have caused issues then help.

Unfortunately, you will need to Repair Install: Here is what our sfc/cbs expert tell about the issue..

The iassdo error is an unfortunately common one - and I've never found a way to fix it properly.
The problem is that somehow the hardlink that refers to it gets redirected to another file 'Pretty Peacock.jpg' - and fixing iassdo louses up PP - and you end up in a never-ending loop fixing those two files in turn.
Better people than I have tried and failed on this - but the only known cure so far is a repair install.

I would uninstall Advanced System Care and go for the repair install.

You can perhaps use CCleaner, built-in defrag, MBAM for some of your needs?

Hi GokAy,thanks to you and your CBS expert for your suggestions.I tried the clean startup method but it didn't quite resolve my issue,but after that I tried uninstalling IObit's Advanced System Care software and to my surprise it did resolve the Black screen problem to some extent.Although it's taking longer time to boot,after entering my profile password the Welcome screen is not quite readily going to desktop,it's taking bit longer unlike before,but black screen seems to have gone.Now desktop along with the icons are loading together like it used to.I haven't done the repair install yet but I shall do it soon.

One thing to ask you does the repair install also sweep out the installed games and softwares or will it only fix the corrupt windows system files only? Otherwise I have to consider taking backups and reinstall them all over again which is somewhat a laborious task for lazy person like me.

By all means take a backup, regardless of repair install or not

Repair Install is not supposed to affect installed programs and user files.

This will show you how to do a repair install (aka: in-place upgrade install) to fix your currently installed Windows 7 and preserve your user accounts, data, programs, and system drivers.

Read the Tips and Warnings in the tutorial to get an idea what will be affected.

I also am getting a black screen late in the startup procedure, with mouse pointer active. But the Repair Install option is too complex for me so I will have to take it to my computer shop.

Steve, you can try these (though they depend on when you get the black screen before or after login):
- Boot with Last Known Good Configuration (F8 menu)
- Restore to a prior date (System Restore) - http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/700-system-restore.html
- Scan for malware (Malwarebytes Anti-Malware free)
- Try a clean startup http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorial...ation-conflicts-performing-clean-startup.html
- Check if explorer.exe is running and start from CTRL+ALT+DEL (task manager - new task)
- Verify in registry: HKEY_Local_Machine\Software\Microsot\Windows NT\Current Version\Winlogon to make sure 'shell = explorer.exe'

- Check Disk - http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/433-disk-check.html
- Try loading defaults in BIOS
- Update all your drivers

Hi GokAy,I took the back up as you told, and instead of repair Install I performed clean Windows Install by deleting and formatting each partitions.Just thought as I am having all the back ups then why not go for clean install.... and my black screen problem seems to have gone now.After getting done with the installation I downloaded some windows updates including Service Pack 1,installed my necessary games and softwares.

I did all these things two days before,just was observing if any thing adverse happens or not,but this time everything seems to be right.Although I haven't installed IObit' Advanced System care programme yet and not considering for future installation either.

So thanks Gokay for your kind cooperation. My issue seems to be solved.

Just one thing to ask you,I saw another person is posting his problems within this thread,so I was just wondering could I mark my this thread as solved or wait for his issue to get solved and then mark it.What should I do?
