Having problems running programs that require Java

So, I'm having issues running things that require a Java runtime enviroment.

It's telling me "A Java Runtime Environment (JRE) or Java Development Kit (JDK) must be available in order to run Xmind (The program I'm trying to run.). No Java virtual machine was found after searching the following locations: C:\Program Files (x86)\XMind\jre\bin\javaw.exe (Hard return) javaw.exe in your current PATH.

I've no idea how to edit the PATH variable successfully. I'm sure this is something I just screwed up.

I've reinstalled Java a dozen times, with no change. (Interestingly, my Ubuntu 10.04 dual-boot install also can't run Java.)

Any suggestions for my surely n00b mistake?

Do a search for javaw.exe and see where it is loceated (or if it is indded installed) compare it to the path, are they the same?

Try copying the javaw.exe from your C:\program files (x86)\Java\jre6\bin folder to the C:\Program Files (x86)\XMind\jre\bin\ folder (don't move the exe, just make a new copy in the XMind folder). A Guy

I think my problem is that it's not IN the PATH. Looking in it, there's nothing about java.

What do I type to add it? I've no idea.

Sorry not following you. The program appears to be looking for javaw.exe. It appears to expect to find it in C:\Program Files (x86)\XMind\jre\bin\. If you go to Program Files (x86) then the XMind folder, then the jre folder, and finally, the bin folder, is there a javaw.exe there? If so, there is another issue than what I am thinking. However, if there is no javaw.exe in the bin file, then that is your whole problem. At this time, I have no reason to think the path is not correct, it's not unusual for programs that require Java to have their own Java exe's in the install. This can actually be a problem if you don't update those programs, as Java may update for security fixes, and you'll have insecure Java for that specific program. If the program has no updates, you can fix it by copying the java exe's found there from your up to date Java installation folder. Rather than trying to figure out how to change a programs default path (which I don't know how to do), it's much easier to just put the exe that's missing in the correct path. Let us know if that exe is found in that bin folder, if it's not, easy fix. A Guy
