HD Failure

I read in another thread that Maxxwire had two HDD fail in 18 months. This surprised me as I thought HD were pretty stable. I have not had one fail. Have any of you had new HD's fail in a short amount of time? I will be getting a new one shortly and was just curious.

I had 3 maxtors go bad within 18 months. I now use WD

Anything can fail regardless of what it is, or who makes it. With that said i've been using Western Digital hard drives since 1998 and only had 3 go bad (no hard fail).

I've had plenty of hard drives die on me over the years, which is expected since I normally have many drives at the same time and use them till I either upgrade to larger drives or they die.

Last year I had a 1TB Western Digital Black drive die on my in 9 days. I was quite surprised as this is their flagship 7200rpm consumer drive. I currently run 3 of these in my system.

I ordered a 2TB Western Digital Green WD20EARS on the 14th of Oct and decided to install it this past Monday. It was DOA, drive spins but clicks and won't format. Called up Newegg and they sent out a replacement that arrived today and it seems to be working fine.

I have never had a hard drive die on me (knock wood). This includes WD's, Seagates, and Maxtors, including drives I have reclaimed from our local transfer station electronics trailer. Just lucky I guess.

However, the very first computer I bought, a 386, mail order, that used a hard drive (those old 286's just had a floppy drive), arrived with a DOA hard drive. This caused a great deal of confusion and sleeplessness, as it was only months later that I realized what had happened. The RMA replacement computer worked fine and I still have that 120MB drive downstairs in a box and it still works!

You have so many HD. Where do you back them up at?

My important files are on 3 of the drives in the system as well as 2 drives in my drawers. The rest of the files on the drives are just some games and bunch of videos. they are not important so if I lose a drive it's just an inconvenience. I am like a digital packrat, storing almost everything I download.
