See this tutorial. You can also use Acronis True Image as long as the version you use has Universal Restore and you have the appropriate drivers.

thanks for the reply, yes i have acroins 2013 with universal restore, when you say the drivers, do you mean all new motherboard drivers and raid controller , all have to be installed during the recovery process
if i need to move my hard disk form an old computer that has legacy software to another computer that has different hardware ( motherboard and processor ) , can i save all the drivers for the new pc and then point the acroin to the path during the recovery process

http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/135077-windows-7-installation-transfer-new-computer.html

That tutorial is based on generalizing Windows installation with Sysprep (Windows System Preparation Tool) which removes all hardware related information such as drivers and registry entries replacing them with general Windows drivers, allowing the image be transfered to any other hardware capable of running Windows.

However. generalizing only works in Windows Vista and later operating systems. Windows XP cannot be generalized with Sysprep. If I read the OP correctly he / she is talking about an XP system.

My mistake. I overlooked the XP part since I was in the mindset of this Windows 7 forum.

when you say the drivers, do you mean all new motherboard drivers and raid controller , all have to be installed during the recovery process
Yes, but
I would review the manual for Acronis TI
