Try this "recipe" to get things working again.

Essentially you stop the Windows Update service first. Then you delete (or rename) the \Windows\SoftwareDistribution folder. Then you restart Windows Update service.

Let me know if it solves the problem or not.

According to this other MS Community forum post, you might double check other Windows services as follows:



This can sometimes be the result of a possible malware attack. So update your AV package and run a full scan, the download, install, update, and run a full scan with free malwarebytes. This should hopefully prove your PC is clean, or find and remove any malware ( if there is any ).

Then try the msfixits for update - http://support.microsoft.com/fixit/?wa=wsignin1.0 search for 'update' ( no quotes ), and run the 'Fix the problem with Microsoft Windows Update that is not working' fixit.

If it still doesn't work, then check the following in services. <start> in 'search programs and folders' type "services" ( without the quotes ), click 'services' in the program results. Or, just RUN SERVICES.MSC.

Check the the following services are listed and running:
Windows Update
Remote Procedure call (RPC)
DCOM service process launcher
RPC Endpoint Mapper
Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS)

If any are listed and stopped, then try setting them to started ( i.e. try to start them ) and 'Automatic (Delayed start)' for BITS and Windows Update, with the other three set for 'Automatic'.
You will need to run 'services' as administrator to start the service. So right-click it in the results and 'click Run As Administrator'.

ok there is no back ground intelligent transfer service (bits)in my list fix it would not run it said that it encountered and error and male ware had no detections so thats all clean

You can download Service Pack 1 yourself manually, from the MS Update Catalog site... but you must be using Internet Explorer to do that (not Firerox, Chrome, etc.).

Once on that page, enter "Windows 7 service pack 1" (without surrounding quotes) into the SEARCH area and push the search button.

NOTE: It's about a 900MB download, but if you have the time and a reasonably fast internet connection you can just let it run until it finishes. Better to get it that way than not at all.

Well, maybe we're getting closer. This is the missing service that is required, according to all the other information we've now seen.

This is a recipe for how to create that missing BITS service, but you need to follow the instructions carefully. Obviously you shouldn't be having to do this if your recovery disk was perfect, but clearly something's not right with your recovery disk in my opinion.

Here's a second recipe that seems to be a bit better written, although again its goal is to recreate the missing BITS service that is critical to Windows Update.

Perhaps manually downloading and installing that large SP1 file from the MS Update site is the best next step, if you can't get the BITS service operational. But without BITS, you cannot do Windows Update.

Once the download finishes, I'm sure it will be either an EXE or MSI or MSP or something executable. If you just double-click on it when it's all received, it should launch automatically.

Again, this doesn't guarantee to get the missing BITS service working, which is really at the heart of the failure for Windows Update to work. And why BITS is missing, well that's the real mystery...although it clearly is somehow tied to whatever was on that recovery disk you used to supposedly reinstall Windows to "factory".

But let's see what happens when you finally try and manually run the SP1 installer. Be patient, because this will take some time to complete once it starts. You've already said in your very first post that your system is very slow, so we need to be patient (while keeping our fingers crossed about the outcome).

I assume your SP1 download is still proceeding, and that we're still waiting for it to complete. Or maybe it's completed and you're now running it to get it installed.

Anyway, while waiting, I noticed another thread which seems relevant in that it asks about how to restore missing services that have somehow disappeared. In that thread there was a reference to a tutorial which told how to use a very simple and straightforward REG "merge" (i.e. update the Windows Registry with a pre-provided definition) to reinstall and activate a missing but at one time originally present service from the complete list of services.

Your missing BITS service is not the one that the other thread is discussing, but that tutorial which describes how to get a missing service restored seems very useful and helpful... is you click on the Background Intelligent Transfer Service item (in the chart of that tutorial) and follow the rest of the instructions.

Perhaps this will get your BITS service reinstated, so that official Windows Update can once again work. Dunno. Maybe.

well i tried to do the install and it said catistrofic erro and closed down so my next step is to just get a version of windows 7 and whip the hd and start from scratch and see what happens

Anyway, you're going to be MUCH BETTER OFF doing a true "retail install" from scratch with an installation DVD. Something was very wrong with that recovery disk result.
