Suddenly My Laptop Freezes And The Hdd Light Turns off

how did you fix the previous overheating, did you open the laptop? maybe the hard drive's connection cable is not firmly plugged in, that caused the broken link between the hd to the laptop thus no data tranfer indicated by the hd light. check BIOS if the hd is detected.

ram issue can also cause freezes. try doing memory diagnostic from the f8 advanced boot option. if the ram is fine, then it's not hardware but operating system or software problem. see if it still freezes when using safe mode. if it doesn't, then one of the windows drivers which is loaded in normal session is not working properly causing the stop.
