hdmi audio to tv software audio to laptop

Is it possible to send audio from for example Youtube to my tv but keep the sound from software on my laptop. I've just searched google but most of what comes up is "how do I connect my laptop to my tv". The reason is is that I generally have youtube on in the background whilst I work on my laptop but I have software that requires me to hear the sounds (ear training software) but can't use it whilst I have the hdmi on.

Windows only allows one default audio playback device. e.g. HDMI OR PC audio but not both. There may be a third party program that will allows this but I'm not aware of it.

Thanks. I've looked into virtual cables and virtual mixers but haven't found anything suitable as of yet.

What you may want to take a look at is a USB sound card - these are dongles with their own input sockets and you may find one that does not follow the rules the way they should - There are many different options and I have seen them used as monitor outputs for mobile DJs - Main sound goes to the amplifier for public "enjoyment" and the dongle output is used for Headphones used for cueing up the tracks, so two different inputs / outputs are possible. there may be such a thing as a software mixer to meet your needs and the dongles are most likely the thing to support this

Thanks. I have a few of these and will look into it. It's a shame there isn't a simpler solution without plugging extra stuff in. my laptops are hardly portable these days with all the stuff plugged into them
