HDMI to HDMI only working with second monitor attached

Hi,

I have an Asrock ION 330 HT BD with a Sony Bravia 720p attached (HDMI to HDMI). When I start up my PC, the screen remains black. Only after I plug in a second monitor, both screens work just fine. When I pull the second monitor out, the Bravia also stops getting a signal. Seems a bit weird.. How can I get it to work with just the Bravia attached?

Hi and welcome to the forum.

Have you made sure your graphics card driver is up to date?

Have you tried starting your PC up in safe mode and seeing if the problem still persists?

Please ensure you have done both of these and then post back; it would also be helpful if we knew your system specifications which you can fill in under 'User CP'.

Also does the task bar appear on the primary monitor or secondary monitor?

Updated some of my system specs in my profile.. Haven't tested in windows safe mode yet, will do that after submitting this reply.
I've configured the Bravia TV as first monitor. That's also where the taskbar appears. Works fine with a second monitor, but doesn't seem to work on its own..
Updated the nvidia drivers, motherboard and graphics drivers.

update: I can only go into safe mode with my VGA monitor, my HDMI doesn't get a signal before windows starts. Does this mean it's a chipset problem?

Can you please just confirm something for me; your Sony Bravia TV is connected via HDMI and your secondary monitor is connected via VGA?

Please will you answer these questions and try out anything you have not already tried.

You CAN go into safe mode using both monitors, correct?
Do you mean in Safe Mode nothing is displayed at all on the secondary monitor?
Before the login screen appears, assuming you have both monitors plugged in, which one(s) displays everything?

Have you checked in the BIOS (usually accessed by pressing F8 or Delete during the boot sequence) to see what it says about your displays? Make sure that VGA is set to primary or something equivalent to that. If this doesn't work try temporarily disabling HDMI in the BIOS if at all possible; or in fact try disabling VGA and see what happens.

Hi,

Bravia is connected with HDMI and the secondary monitor with VGA, correct. Before windows starts, the VGA monitor displays everything.

I can only go in safe mode on my VGA monitor. When I boot with only my HDMI tv, It stays black.
In the BIOS there's no option for graphic settings, only something about HDMI sound. So I cannot turn VGA or HDMI off...

This suggests to me that your PC wants the VGA connection to be the primary monitor.
Have you tried booting with the VGA cable plugged into the PC but with no monitor on the other end of it?

Try booting in safe mood, delete the VGA. reboot normal, if the HDMI does not come on do a ten minute power reset on the monitor. You could also try booting with no monitor then plugging in the HDMI

It is a seven issue, I had the same thing. The Bravia is not windows 7 certified is the issue AKA known as the EDID issue.Windows wants the monitor companies to be Windows 7 certified, and they have not as of yet. Try reading this thread

HI, I am not an expert, but my old samsung plasma screen works fine with HDMi and my asrock ion...
To be able to display something, I had to "match" the energy settings of the computer and the screen.
That means that I had to navigate in the menus of my screen and to do some "manipulation"...everything was describe in my user guide of my TV...
Maybe it is the same for you?
What is the exact model of TV?
I tried to send you a message (because I was not able to post here!) but it seems to be ok now!
