Head Bashing with Remote Desktop

Hi folks...

I'll be as quick as I can...

Got a new machine
installed windows 7 ultimate
RDP to a Vista and XP machine for a week or so.. No problems...

Today, went out at lunch, the new W7 machine went to sleep
Back from lunch
powered it back on (like I have done 100 times already) Sheesh

RDP to the other machines was gone.
Tried to RDP back... (Ha..) No luck whatsoever.

Initiating Remote Connection......... Wait wait wait...

Then Error...

Remote Desktop cannot connect...

1 Remote accesss to the server is not enabled. (been doing it for a week)
2. Remote computer is turned off. (Can use windows explorer to view drives on remote machines)
3. Remote computer is not available. (it is... Can view the contents of the drives, open files etc etc)

I could really use some help on this... I appreciate you reading this post...

Hi there
all i can suggest are the following.

1) You actually still have RDP on the client computer.

2) Check firewalls on BOTH machines - is port 3389 enabled as well as RDP program allowed through.

3) Your remote machine - does it have a dynamic IP -- check that the IP address is still valid by pinging it. If you are using something like no-ip to fix your dynamic IP check that the IP of the remote address is correct.

4) Check that nothing "screwy" has hosed up your AV software -- while testing switch it off.

If you cant fix RDT there is a 4rd party app that actually works better. Its called team viewer.

Fun with W7

HI Guys,

Thanks for your replies. It seems very strange, but all the ports are open I can RDP TO the W7 Machine from Vista... Just can't go from W7 to anything else... I heard about the existence of a file for "Sleep Mode" and I was just wondering if it may have been corrupted thus causing this problem... Has anyone heard of this? If so do you know the file name?

Have you tried a cold restart of the Windows 7 machine? This would let you know if the problem was indeed induced by the sleep mode.

I'm having the same issue as the OP.

Windows 7 Ultimate, now trying to connect to Win XP Pro SP3.
I've checked that remote sharing is enabled and firewall is set to allow port connection.
I've rebooted the Win 7 machine and still no connection. I don't get any error though, it shows the progress bar for less than a second, then back to the connection window. I'm connecting by machine name, not IP and I can ping the machine name and get full reply.
Any ideas on what else might be causing it not to connect? I'm going to try going from XP to 7, and also try and remote to another Win 7 box.

Update:
Tried every which way and could not connect to XP machine from either Windows 7 machines I have. The Windows 7 machines connected to each other fine. Searched other forums and found a suggestion to update the video drivers (didn't specify Windows 7 machine or XP machine). So I ran Windows Update on both machines making sure to include the available video driver update. After reboot, connected just fine. There were other updates installed, but just the typical security and KB updates. Don't know if there was anything in there or not. Anyway, something to try. Can't say exactly why the video drivers would help, but seems like it did.
