headphone problems

Hey, I have my computer hooked up to my tv via hdmi cable. I know that the audio and video both go through that.
But when i plug in headphones, I always assumed it would switch where the audio comes from.
I have a "AMD 780G" sound card. Also, i have a 5.1 speaker system, logitech. hooked up to my tv.

When i plug the headphones in the computer, a pop up says "has been plugged it" and when I remove it, the opposite.
Im just wondering since im using hdmi is there something i have to do so when i plug in headphones it stops sound comin from the speakers and just plays in the headset?

thanks alot

In most systems if you have the HDMI enabled then that is the "playback device" and you won't get sound from the PC"s speakers or headphone jack.

Another thing to understand is that the sound over HDMI with the 780G/HD3200 (or any of the ATI HD series of video cards or chipsets that support it) is that it is not the sound card (whether the onboard or an actual card) that is processing the sound, but a sound chip built in to the video card (which is from Realtek).

In your case when you plug in your headphones the pop up would be the jack detection from your onboard video (probably either Realtek or Via, didn't find much about that model of Acer), and for you to use the headphones you will have to open the Windows Playback control and change the default from the ATI HDMI to whatever the sound card is.
