Heya, I have an HP Pavilion EP dv6 and I have a skullcandy "lowrider" headset, I was messing around with it today because I thought the microphone was broken, but I kept heard like a shuffling noise, and I sneezed and while my face was aiming towards the speakers on the headset, and I heard it!
Why do I have to speak through the speakers on my headset for sound to come out? And even if I have it on my head normally and I talk you can't hear me.
Help!
I also have a built in microphone but that doesn't work.
Hello and welcome lazaro depending on what sort of headphones they are they can be used as microphones. For example the older moving coil phones used to be able to be used as microphones as they work along very similar lines.
That is because they are activated by air pressure waves in any case. Microphones are activated by pressure waves in and phones by pressure waves out.
Having said that it does of course depend a great deal on how the force of the pressure waves is generated each way but they can be used in reverse of what they are manufactured for.

Yep mate good point and why the phones are acting as I described because the phones are transmitting in the pressure waves because the mechanism works on the physical movement of the sound pressure waves (frequencies) toward or away from the source.

Exactly and the same principle applies to the piezoelectric type devices so whatever the system features the in and out going pressure waves are governed by the particular device materials.
