Recently I've been having an issue with my headphones. I plug them into my laptop jack, and the volume control says that the headphone's sound is being adjusted when I make it louder and quieter. However, the sound still comes out of the computer's speakers. I have tried to vary the volume level of the speakers and the headphones and nothing happens, the sound still comes out of the speakers. So I then go into the speaker options and manage audio devices. I have to open the speaker options up and manually turn off the computers speakers. Once I do this the sound comes out of the headphones. Even before I shut the speakers off the green check is on the headphones Icon and it says that's where the sound is coming out of, even when it's not  any idea how I can change this so that it works without having to turn off the speakers manually each time?

Some sound systems have a manager program, such as the RealTek HD Audio Manager and it will allow you to set up the sound so the speakers are muted when you plug in headphones (usually the default setting) or set up so the speakers remain on when headphones are plugged in.

You failed to list the actual Dell laptop model (such as Inspiron 1501, etc) so I can't check to see what sound you have.

In addition, the Dell supplied sound driver should be used. Non-Dell drivers either do not work or do not work correctly. If you don't have the Dell sound driver installed that is probably the problem.
