My computer gets pretty hot so I was wondering if putting it on top of the desk would help. (it also gets pretty dusty sitting under there)

You will need to fill in your specs. If it's a notebook, vacuum vents to make sure not clogged with dust. Also can purchase cooling pad for notebook to sit on.

If it's a desktop, vacuum as well and you can install additional fans, check to see if you have a prog. to monitor temp, or it you need to have fans run full all the time.

Also, do you have the processor or video overclocked?

Do you know what part of it specifically is generating the heat?

Speedfan is a good utility to show where your heat is coming from, and you can adjust your fan speeds manually through it as well.

I would recommend taking a look at the temperatures of different components, and that might give you an idea of what is generating heat, or if temperatures are pretty even, then your computer might just be in a bad spot.

its a desktop not overclocked its slimline so i cant fit any more fans in and it already has 2 fans built in. The two spots that get really hot are the graphics card, and the diskdrive.

This all depends. For a system like that. Good Air Flow is essential.
If where you have it does not get good airflow, then yes, move it.

Another thought is to pop the top off and vacuum inside the pc. Don't know if you've added any components inside, but make sure wires are organized to allow best airflow. Is there a ton of dust inside? Do all fans spin?

Just because I have to deal with that kind of stuff all the time: Especially if you have Cats or worse: Bunnies (not the Playboy kind in the house you should clean out the fan, case and heat sink more frequently.
Their fur is so fine that it literally gets anywhere. Especially if the computer stands on the ground/under the desk.

Go to WallyMart and get a $6.00 fan and sit it next to you Slimline computer for extra ventilation. IMHO

If you have access to a compressor just blow all the dust out off it and brush any access dust off with a fine brush, also on a side note as other people have been saying you need to fill out system specs, please refer to my sig on how to fill out system specs.

Its highly advised not to have machines on the floor. Doing so makes it a dust magnet.
It'l also clog fans a lot faster, which is what most of us suspect.
If there is room on the desk for it, put it on the desk.

Well, your graphics card gets hot because it's sitting right on top of the power supply. Not a whole lot we can fix there... The only thing I can think of (besides cleaning) is to check which way your fan is blowing. If it's blowing in, you need to turn it around so its blowing out.

If it's blowing out, measure your fan from screw to screw on one side, and get a more powerful fan, that moves more air.


I'm guessing from the picture that it's a 92mm case fan, but I could be wrong.

That one will do you well if it is a 90mm. If it turns out that HP is cheap and it's an 80mm, you can give any of these a try:

If it's 80mm, you can trade noise for air flow. This fan is a touch noisier than the others, rated at 30dB, which is generally compared to a quiet library, or a bedroom at night.

hey I have an earlier thread saying my computer gets hot. So i opened the computer to see whats up with it. Apparently it has 3 fans already built into it yet it still gets pretty hot(mostly disk drive) I might buy new fans for it and replace the old ones or should I just use rivatuner and crank up the fan speed?

Depending on the computer, there may not be a way to control the fans through software. I'm assuming it is an OEM system, weren't sure of the number of fans.

Usually, you can run the system with the case side off, and check how the air is flowing through out the case. Then you'll know if any fans need to be replaced, or just re-orientated.

oh no it has 3 and ive controlled the fans thrugh rivaturner before i just didnt keep the settings because it makes the fans become extremly loud

If it is a custom built system, as in you built it, I'd look into replacing the fans or the case. If it is an OEM system, I wouldn't do so until it was out of warranty.

Hard drives get hot. Is it getting so hot it shuts the PC down? If it is getting hot because you are gaming on it or using extremely power hungry programs then you could buy a new air cooler for your CPU. I don't know your system specs so I can't suggest one, but they are pretty cheap and you can find them on newegg or tigerdirect.com. You could also buy newer, faster and quieter case fans to put in it as well. If Revatuner helped before and you can live with the noise, than just do that. If not replace the old with new.

ok so no its just gaming thats making it really hot and nothing is breaking im just afraid it will. But are those fans that LiquidSnak mentioned that much better than the HP ones. Oh and is there something that will tell me what size my fans are. I dont want to get a 90mm if it will only hold an 80
