You are correct, I did not run another check after installing all the updates, might as well try, then I plan on trying this:

Sounds like a plan.
Create a new restore point. Once that's done, try to restore your computer to the earliest restore point you have. Once the restore finishes, make sure to run Windows Updates, update your antivirus, etc and see if you can create a system image. If it works, problem solved. If it doesn't, use that newest restore point and you're no worse off than you were. Just a thought if you don't mind the extra work.
