Hello, please help!

Thank God, for this forum! You all seem to have it together, than the official windows 7 forum on Microsoft.

I have been trying to upgrade for a week. I cannot use my computer at all, unless I'm attempting to upgrade to windows 7 again. It won't allow me to go into (safe mode).

Not only am I having that problem, when I do, get far, after installing Windows 7 (this would be the 12th time) It gets stuck on the "setup is starting services" thing, and then goes to a black screen.

It says it going to restart, and it does, but nothing comes back up on the screen.

And what really sucks, is the Hp Slimlines 3120n are having a "motherboard" problems, and somehow it affects, the monitor displaying "video." But, even with that, I could at least restart it, and get back on my computer. Now, since I've "cleaned installed" to Windows 7, it triggered this problem even more.

I cannot get to vista, and don't even see it listed in the "partions" or whatever it's called, anymore.

I've tried the Vista recovery disk (got an error), the bcd bootsec thing, I'm all out of options!

This finals week at my school, and this has put a damper in my ability to research, study, write essays, and etc. I honestly regret even trying to upgrade, but since I bought it, I want it to work, you know? I really need help!

p.s. Yes, I did the upgrade adviser, it said everything was fine! What do I need to do to get this to work? I'm not a beginner, but I'm not that advanced to where I know where everything is to fix it.

Unfortunately, most of the fixes found for this stall are not available to you now (uninstall your AV, etc) and you may need to abandon the in-place Upgrade at some point to boot from the DVD and clean install. I hope you backed up your files.

If you bought the Upgrade retail, you are entitled to MS excellent tech support which has the fixes for these stalls and will walk your through them.

If you have an Upgrade Kit from HP, then they provide the support and you may need additional support from HP anyway for the mobo issue. You paid for one year's tech support included when you bought the computer.

Let's try to startup the Upgrade in the hope that it has a complete installation to repair. You need to boot from your Win7 DVD into the Repair My Computer console to see if it finds an installation, then select from Recovery Tools> Startup Repair. Run it as many times an necessary until it either starts up Windows 7 or says it has no problems to fix.

If you cannot boot into your DVD, then you need to tap the F-key given on the first boot screen at power-up to Enter BIOS setup (normally ESC, f1 or f2) then set the DVD drive to boot first, before Hard Drive.

Restart and look for prompt to "press any key to boot from CD/DVD drive"

If tech support cannot help you and you cannot repair the installation, then it may be time to abandon the in-place Upgrade and get the much-superior clean install, booting from the DVD and selecting "keep me connected to internet during install" (plug ethernet), Custom install, and then Advanced drive tools to Format before install.

I tried this solution:


To delete the partition using Diskpart:
Open a copy of Diskpart following the instruction given earlier.
Enter "list disk"
Enter "select disk n"
Enter list partition"
Enter "select partition n"
Enter "delete partition override"

Now try reinstalling Windows.

*Right now, I am trying to reinstall windows, and so far I have been stuck at the last part of the installation "completing installation" for more than an hour!

The progress bar underneath seems to have not moved, since it started this last section of the installation.

I also booted it from the DVD, as suggested, and clicked the repair option. I no longer see windows 7 two times, which is good. But, still I'm back where I once was. Stuck!

If you do a clean install on top of your existing installation (Vista or 7, maybe XP too), it will rename your files to Windows.old, which it places in C:. You can later retrieve your personal info (music, pictures, etc).

If it showed a Win7 partitiion, then it was very likely reparable.

Did you click through to Recovery Tools to run Startup Repair 3 separate times as suggested.

Or did you instead use the Diskpart commands given to remove a recov partition and reinstall? Why?

The Diskpart commands given are to delete a recov partition which might be interfering with Upgrade.

Did you have such a partition and insert the correct disk and partition numbers where "n" was present?

Does it show that partition gone now on the disk map given when you choose where to install Windows?

Did you delete all of the present partitions and Create a new one to format and install windows in?
