help about a new harddisk?

hi

i have a western digital 160gb caviar blue hd now i want to buy a new one but some questions are bothering me

first is seagate any better than western digital i ask this because 1tb seagate is just slightly expensive than 500gb western digital so should i go for seagate?

second is that if i buy seagate, will it cause any problem to the system having one wd hd and one seagate?

please answer in details would love to hear anything to increase the knowledge

1. you can mix any makes of disks. They are all 'compatibel'.

2. the make does not matter. They are all the same since they all come from the same factories in Thailand. I have a dozen different makes and do not notice any difference.

3. except Seagate - one of those just died on me. The first and only disk that died in my installations.

when u say died what exactly do u mean and also how much time did u use that seagate disk for?

Died means that it was no more useable at all. This was an external disk attached via USB. I had used it for about 4 years - but some of my other disks are older.

but i am trying to get an internal hd will the seagate internal one will die too after 5years because i have had no problems with western digital

All here will have strong opinions on drive manufacturers. In my system I've used Hitachi, Toshiba, Western Digital, Seagate, Maxtor and Samsung ssd and Crucial ssd's. The most recent purchase was a 2tb 64gb cache Seagate Barracuda which is working great. It was down to it or the WD Green 2 tb with 64gb cache but the Seagate was less money and spins at a full 7200 rpm. Really in the end there are only two types of HDD's, the one that's died and the one that's about to die. Redundancy and or cloud back up plans are your only best bet.

The drives are all the same - internal and external. Only the packaging is different. The only additional risk with an external drive is that the controller could go belly up.

Regardless what you buy, you can get a real good one or a lemon that was made on Monday morning. I would go by the lowest price rather than make. That's how I ended up with all those different makes.
