hello
i was trying today to make a new partition using disk management on win7 64bit;everything went wrong
NOTE: i'm on a laptop (the only machine) that has only 1 hdd and used to have 4 partitions: C: D: E: and systemH:
i shrinked the volume of C: which was 444gb to get 12gb unallocated space
i chose to create a partition with the unallocated space
before starting it told me something about dynamic; i ignored it cuz i didnt know what dynamic and basic mean
so i chose yes; suddenly all partitions became yellow/brown
i noticed that there was no more primary partitions so i created a system repair disk and the hp recovery media discs
after shutting down i knew something wrong's gonna happen so i turned it on again and got error 0x00000000225 or something like that and cant boot windows (not found)
what i wanna do now is to get back the hdd to basic
i tried installing ubuntu 11.10 on the 12gb partition but that didnt work
tried the system recovery disk: it found the errors so i chose to automatically fix them
win7 boot normal
still cant install any other os
can convert hdd to basic anymore
i have easeus partition master 9.10 home edition and i tried it but says there's an error in c: while converting to basic; it says i can ignore the error but that may make the disk unbootable

  • the question is: if i continue using easeus and make it basic while ignore the error, will the data on the discs be conserved?
  • if the drive becomes unbootable, and i use system recovery disk, will it be back to it's original state?
  • if not, any other way to switch the hdd back to basic without installing any os and without loosing the data?
i messed up realllyyy well this time and cant afford loosing anything
what i have:
  1. the laptop
  2. system repair disc(created by windows)
  3. hp recovery discs
  4. a very unreliable internet connection
  5. 3 empty dvds
what i don't have and cant get:
  1. external hdd
  2. money :D
  3. windows 7 hp 64bit installation disc
so can anyone help me PLZ?? i need to get the hdd basic again without loosing partitions or windows

NB:the specs are:
1hdd 500 gb
amd phenom II N930 quad core processor 2.00 ghz
amd M880G with ati mobility radeon hd 4250 & ati radeon hd 5650 1gb
4gb ram
i dunno the motherboard
hp pavillion dv6 laptop: i think it's factory refurbrished

i already read about dynamic and basic but didnt help me a lot; i want to use the laptop for dual and triple boot after fixing it

Partition Wizard is capable of converting a dynamic disk back to basic.

You'll need to go here Free Download Magic Partition Manager Software - Partition Wizard Online and download the bootable CD .iso (the other installers won't do you any good as they're meant to be run within Windows). Then burn the .iso to a CD - if you don't have one and truly can't afford a few blank discs, you'll have to sacrifice one of your DVDs.

Boot with that CD and just follow the instructions to convert your HDD back.

For the record, you can't have more than 4 primary partitions on your HD. Your attempt to add a fifth prompted the conversion to a dynamic disk.
What you can do is have 3 primary and 1 extended partition. Within the extended partition, you can then create multiple logical volumes as you wish.

hi and sorry for taking too long to reply
i've got a question here: using the Free Download Magic Partition Manager Software - Partition Wizard Online, will it delete any data on my laptop or will everything stay in the hdd? cause i can't afford loosing any data and this is the ONLY hd i have
also i read about using hxd to change 42 to 07 (i think) will that work in my case and keep data?
i'm stuck with few solutions and don't want to format

Hello Gilbert, and welcome to Seven Forums.

If you follow the steps like in OPTION FOUR of the tutorial below at boot using Corazon's suggestion posted above, then you should be fine without losing any data. However, just to be safe, I would strongly recommend to backup any data that you do now want to lose to another location (DVD, USB, etc....).

http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/26829-convert-dynamic-disk-basic-disk.html

Hope this helps,
Shawn

You would need to do it all at boot as Corazon suggested, but it's basically the same steps as in Option Four except all through the program at boot.

Do you still have five partitions on the HD? You can only convert it back to a basic disk if you have at most four partitions...If you have a fifth, you need to delete it first. (Be careful not to delete the wrong one.)

Gilbert,

When you boot from the bootable CD version, you would need to select and delete (Do not format) all of your dynamic volumes/partitions, then pick up at step 8 in the tutorial to use the Partition Recovery Wizard to restore the deleted partitions back to basic with data.

Gilbert,

Did you delete all of the partitions for the Disk # listed as dynamic until the disk # shows as "Unallocated" like Disk 1 does in the screenshot below?
123228d1292306227-convert-dynamic-disk-basic-disk-program-3.jpg

Does it give you any other options other than just "not supported"?

any operation related to the dynamic disc or the volumes on it give me the unsupported error
anyway:

i just finished restarting with the hd BASIC!!
that was awesome
i just opened hxd, changed all 42's to 07's from 1c0 and it worked like a charm!
i found it WAYYYY more convenient than all those software
anyways thanks for the help and support i was given by all the members in this forum
i suggest making the tutorial more precise on what to do in cases like mine(1hd with os on it, no data loss) and adding the hexadecimal trick to it only for experts and people who know what they're doing
