The current system I have I built back in '09. I've wanted to replace the MB for years because it's had some quirky problems. My system just today(18 Aug) said it was ready for upgrade to win 10, after being registered since the first day Microsoft made Win 10 registration available, but I want the HW upgraded before I do that. The last time I did a 'Heart Transplant' was back in the XP days and I had little to no trouble with it. I just want to know if windows 7 copy security will give me too much trouble and if there are any gotchas that I should look out for?
As long as your Windows DVD is a retail version, you shouldn't have a problem. You can't just boot from the disk for the new MB and CPU. Windows will have to be reinstalled along with the MB drivers. If you bought an OEM version of Windows, I'm afraid you're out of luck as it is a ONE PC license. A new motherboard constitutes a new PC and the OEM license won't transfer.

OK Well I do have a full license Windows 7 Ultimate , But I'll have to go dig for the DVD. This is different than XP, it automatically would detect driver differences and you could install them. So you're saying I have to do a re-install or can I do a repair? The main reason I'm trying this heart transplant is to save all the old software I have installed (hundreds of programs and apps).
The product ID is not an OEM one. IT is a full license; I remember the funky plastic case the Microsoft started using back then. I'll just have to find the disc.
You can try a boot from the old disk. The worst that will happen is a BSOD. You WILL need your key and will have to recertify Windows on the new PC. And you will need to install the drivers from your MB disc.
