I have recently bought a new computer and have been trying to install Windows 7. I am now in a loop where I get passed the "Starting Windows" screen and a box opens up saying "Windows cannot complete the installation. To continue installing Windows, restart the computer". When you click on "Ok" it automatically restarts and takes you back to where this box pops up.

This seems impossible to get passed. I would be grateful if anyone could give me advice.

Thanks,

Michael Wilbourn.

Are you trying to upgrade or do a clean install?? Also, remove all but one stick of ram when installing, as this is a known issue for some 64bit machine...

Is everything disconnected? You should have a modem, monitor, and keyboard. You also need an internet connection.

I may have selected the upgrade option instead of installing it fresh. Would that have anything to do withit?...If so how can I rectify?

Where did you get the Windows 7 DVD? Did you burn it yourself?

Did you initially boot from the DVD ("press any key to boot from CD/DVD" at bootup) or run it from the previous OS desktop? You said you might have selected "Upgrade" so it would have been run from the Vista OS in that case.

Do you still have the ability to boot into your Vista OS? If so, you can extract the DVD to the desktop, then run Setup to attempt your Upgrade or Custom clean install.

Hi Greg,

I got a fresh copy from the company I bought it from. Brand new computer so no OS was on it previously. It still gave me the option to upgrade, completely my mistake for selecting wrong option, I need to somehow start again and install a it from scratch.

How far did the Upgrade installation (which is done from the Vista desktop) get before it started looping?

Boot into the installer "Repair my Computer" console and see if it finds an installation to repair. Run Startup Repair repeatedly to fix possible multiple issues, until it starts up.

Thanks for everyones help. I have installed Windows now but it still freezes after about 10-15mins of being started up. We think its a hardware issue now so going to speak to the company I bought it from. Fingers crossed it can be fixed quickly!

Thanks again,

Mike.

Did I understood right? You got Windows 7 from the company you bought your PC and PC was without any OS on it?

If so, when you trying to install your Windows 7 you should not be able at all to choose "Upgrade", as that option you can only choose if you have Windows Vista runing on your PC.
The only case that I can think out is that maybe you've got not a full version of Windows 7 as it is, but "Upgrade copy of Windows 7", as theese you get only from PC manufacturer that has chosen to participate in the "Windows 7 Upgrade Option Program".
