HELP! can't type password login

Hi
Just purchased a new Dell laptop with win7 Pro installed a few days ago.
Everything was going fine till I tried to log in this evening.

Tried to enter my password, nothing, can't type in the box, nothing happens when I type.

I have tried starting in safe mode but it brings me back to the login screen with the same result.

Have also tried to restore from a backup I made on a external drive, same result.

How do I check if I have an Administrator logon? or can anyone suggest something else?

Hold down f8 to get into safe + networking. Post here when you're in there and I'll have suggestions.

Type netplwiz into start menu search box. Hit enter. Use that to make it not need typing to log in. (Set the password with this.)

Reboot after.

If it doesn't help when inside Windows again, reboot to safe mode + networking and let me know.

when i try to start in safe mode + networking i'm taken back to the login screen which i can't get past as it won't take any keyboard typing commands. maybe i'm doing something wrong, i've only recently started using windows?

cracked it!
got logged in by f8+ starting with last known good configuration (Advanced).

I'm pleased that you have worked out how to solve your problem. That option, Last Known Good Configuration, has come in useful for me many times, from XP to Vista and now Windows 7.

I had the EXACT same problem. This tip fixed the problem for me.

Start > Run>regsvr32 shgina.dll [enter] – Log off and see if you can now enter your password.

If your PCs are working properly, create backup HDD images, as soon as possible.
