Do you have iTunes installed (or even Adobe CS)? I have read that the Bonjour service that is installed as an adjunct can be detrimental in some cases. I have not personally encountered such but it can be an issue.

Check for the latest SATA/IDE storage controller or chipset on the computer or mobo model's Support Downloads webpage.

Either run its installer or unzip and browse to find the driver from Device Manager>Storage Controller>Update Driver tab.

Check for newer firmware for the DVD drive on the LB Support Downloads webpage.

Please fill in your System Specs at bottom left of your post to get more detailed help.

This is something that has been posted before. Either CD only or DVD only won't play. Do you have the original Windows 7 installation DVD? If so, see if the PC will boot from the DVD. You don't have to use any features on the DVD, just see if it can boot and then reboot to Windows. If it can boot, then the hardware is working fine with Windows, and you likely have a software conflict.

Also, an easy thing to try is use the MS fixit to remove upper and lower filters. It will cause no harm, and it just might work. It's designed more for drives that are unrecognized, but worth a try.

Your CD or DVD drive can't read or write media

If none of the suggestions help, you can try a clean boot to test again if it is software related
