Help Determining issue: random reboot.

Ok, So. I've tryed a lot. I've looked around a lot. Never found anything that is exactly my problem but here goes...

Set up.
Mobo - Intel DP55KG
Proc -i7 870 @ 2.93
Ram - Originally 8 currently at 4
Vid Card - Asus Matrix GTX285
Monitor - Samsung Syncmaster 23" X2
HDD - Samsung 1.5 TB
Running - Win 7 Ultimate 64bit

Issue - Random reboots with no common factor, however Windows Media Center in any form or any video on the internet can cause it to reboot. It RARELY does it while I'm playing a game. I think only once to date and something else might have been open. Happens a lot listening to music or watching video.

I thought it was heat at first but I am not thinking that now as it gets much hotter playing video games then it does when it is rebooting.

I thought it might be the Syncmaster drivers because I saw a couple errors (The browser service has failed to retrieve the backup list too many times on transport \Device\NetBT_Tcpip_{4C08B9EC-5B4A-49CD-9E24-BFFBE04C1B48}. The backup browser is stopping.) in my event viewer that delt with the extra fine tuning software they come with ... but the issue is still there.

Talked to both Asus (vid card) and intel (mobo+proc) and they said there should be no issue with current drivers and I have updated both... problem is still there.

I think its either a driver for the vidcard or something in 7 or possibly 64bit not liking them. And I suppose I should have said I started there because the most common error around reboot seems to be this (The NVIDIA Display Driver Service service has reported an invalid current state 32.) error. There are also a couple other errors and criticals but they are both more to do with the unexpeded shut down I believe.

Critical - The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first. This error could be caused if the system stopped responding, crashed, or lost power unexpectedly.

Error - The previous system shutdown at 6:20:53 PM on ‎11/‎12/‎2009 was unexpected.

I have also Changed out the ram because the intel dude said that the thing will be more stable at 4 then 8 but it still was crashing ... He also said updating the BIOS might help and I've thought that from the begining because so many new builds are fixed with a BIOS flash ...buuuuuut I am not quite comfortable doing that with the thing rebooting for no apparent reason.

It also has done it not playing video and what not but that is the most common reason I can find.

ANY thoughts or tips or other avenues to try would he appreciated.

Two things I would do
goto c:\windows\minidump , zip the dump file (*.dmp) and upload it to us

Second I would check event viewer (type event viewer in search) goto windows log>application tab. check for errors (red in left hand column) that relate to wmp like app hang, app crash, etc. there will be many. note the event ID and source and let us know what they are.

I'm not seeing Minidump anywhere. ?

Also all the red was the error's from event viewer ... I'll grab their codes real quick.

SoOoOo. I just got the debugger tools set up and what not but I am not sure how to get it to start generating dumps when it crashes. Will it do that automatically? I set up the symcache folder and the Windbg to be my default viewer also. Thanks again.

Edit: Also when I was on win 7 RC I didn't have any problems like this. This is a new machine that has never had anything other then win 7 on it, and the RC of win 7 subsequent the actual release.

Edit edit: lol Aaallllthough I guess if it IS a hardware issue 4 to 6 weeks of normal use is not uncommon from a part that goes bad.

I need help with Windows 7 Bluescreens

I am getting intermittent bluescreens while using Windows 7. This happens mainly while using IE 8 or Firefox 3.5. All of the MiniDump files have identical information using Bluescreen view. I have attached the DMP file from the last bluescreen.
The information from Event Viewer is:
Event id: 41
Source: Kernel-Power

I have searched online for information but as yet have been unable to find anything to help.
Any help would be much appreciated.

Likewise I have this issue, a hard reset like the power plug just got pulled.
Had no issues of this kind on XP (still installed), running W7 Professional 64-bit.

Specs are:

Core 2 Duo E8400 3.0
Memory 4GB DDR2
ATI 4850
main drive is a 640GB split in 3 (7, XP & a media drive) & a second 1TB drive.

Here's what I get in Event Viewer:
Error 16/11/2009 2:38:24 p.m. EventLog 6008 None
The previous system shutdown at 2:36:49 p.m. on ‎16/‎11/‎2009 was unexpected.
Critical 16/11/2009 2:38:16 p.m. Kernel-Power 41 (63)
The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first. This error could be caused if the system stopped responding, crashed, or lost power unexpectedly.
Error 16/11/2009 2:38:26 p.m. Eventlog 1101 Event processing
Audit events have been dropped by the transport. 0

There are no errors or anything leading up to the failure, so nothing logs as broken that I can see in Event Viewer.
I thought it might be my PSU failing, but this hasn't happened in XP, and has only ever happened once while playing games, so it's not occuring when something taxing occurs. The last few occured when listening to music, browsing with firefox, and while starting Windows.

Looking back, this has happened before, then been quiet for a few weeks, and then there's been three more in the past day.

After these reboots occur I can get points where 7 just freezes for 30 seconds or so, which is quite irritating when browsing the web, and clicking to change tab pauses the whole system (mouse still moves).

Any advice on where to start would be helpful, as chkdsk comes up clean, as did verifying windows' file integrity. I've also updated my video driver to the latest just in case, and windows update says everything is up to date too.

Don I'm not sure we're experiencing the same issue, as I see no BSOD... but Titan I fear we might be in the same boat. I played/left a game running for over 9 hours today without a single reboot. But browsing or WMCing will still reboot me within 10-20 minutes.

I'm running another win 7 machine in the other room with none of these problems ...

I have the exact same problem. I couldn't isolate the problem to any of my hardwares. I believe this has to do with Windows 7 and you've proven it since everything is fine on XP on the exact same machine.

I have ran OCCT tests, flashed my BIOS, updated driver and none of them works. I'm thinking of removing all windows updates since it was working fine for a month before this problem started.

Yeah Flashed BIOS today as per intel. Now they want me to start RMA'ing the board and the Proc ... not that I'm not enthused about starting the RMA process ... I just don't think it's going to fix the proble. Going in to a friend of mine's shop tomorrow to get another pair of eyes on it.

Gigabyte released 2 new drivers for my mobo. One for SATA another for Realtek HDAudio. I updated both. In addition, I swapped my SATA cable used for my master drive after noticing that it's loose.

It's been 2 days now and everything is working fine. I'll report back if reboot occurs again.

SOLVED.

I've been running my mobo with 20ATX pin without plugging in the +4 even though it's provided by my PSU. Plugged it in and it's now solved.

I reckon Windows 7 uses more power than the XP. Thus it had no problem running on the XP and needed more power for the 7.

I've pretty much given up on this post as it seems to be high jacked by icy. My issue remains, and after RMA'ing the mobo with intel and them saying "no there are "cut traces" on the board we will not be granting you a replacement" and them not being able to tell me where they are located because I see no damage to the board I filed a complaint, that then got "lost in the shuffle" and they then granted a replacement mobo because of the run around I received AAAAAAAAAAANNNNNNNNNNDDDDDDDDDD the *expletive deleted* still reboots randomly when ever it wants with no common factor and even worse then before with repair screens. So it seems to me the original mother board is probably fine and I have no idea what to try. or where to turn.

So if you have ANY idea's or thoughts on my original post please share them with me ... please.

As desperate as this sounds ... I assure you it is more so ... lol.

I'm having exactly the same problem as you two: my computer resets itself when it wants, under Win Pro 7 x64. At first, I thought it was my Radeon as it hapenned while playing Overlord 2 and watching HD movies. But, after googling and seeing that NVidia users had the same problem, and noticing that it resets when watching normal movies (DVDrips, even plain 320x240 videoclips ) , I tried other solutions. I didn't find anything in event viewer either. The resets occur even more often lately (I had 3 resets while watching a movie, then my pacience ended and I switched to an Ubuntu LiveCD to see it to the end and keep my sanity / computer integrity intact), and now, while listening to music and browsing the Internet, it hapenned again, and I found this post. My best bet is, Win7 needs more power, and causes voltage fluctuations that reset the system. I will check into that at an IT service point, as I have a certain cutscene in Overlord 2 that caused my computer to reset EVERY ******* time!!! I'll let you know if I solve this tempering problem we all have, and no one seems to figure out what's wrong.

EDIT: I have found the solution! My memory runs at 1800 MHz, but the Mobo supported it at 1000 MHz or so, and was feeding it 1.5V. After I overclocked it to 1800 MHz and gave it 1.6V, it worked seamlessly. Even that scene in Overlord 2 ran well (I tried that 3 times, just to be sure), and I just watched a 720p movie with no problem whatsoever.
So, try and see if your RAM gets as much power as it needs.
