I now officially hate hdmi.

I am heavily vested in media center (4 tuners, pcie in htpc, 4 extenders, and I recently purchased a 6 tuner ethernet edition for a total of 10 tuners.)

I spent months trying to silve some hdmi problems. Using an ati card, and I tried 5 of them, I kept getting the same problem. Whenever I turn my tv off and then back on, there is no picture. The only way to get it back is to reboot the pc or blindly start live tv before I turn on the tv. I solved that problem by getting an nvidia card.

Worked like a top two years until recently all nvidia cards have gobe nuts. Every live tv show and recording has turned purple! I have tried 3 different nvidia cards, same junk.

Bought a new ati xard, hoping newer stuff would be fixed. Purple tv is gone but now I am back to signal loss ever time I turn off my tv.


Please help before I drive myself nuts!

HDMI is probably requiring a reboot with that video card, it's not the ultimate plug and play like USB is.

I have a Radeon HD 7950, and due to the way it's made with 1 DVI, 1 HDMI and 2 mini-display ports, I can only get 2 video devices up at once, and occasionally have goofiness with the HDMI connected monitor that requires me to cycle it off and on to get the picture up. Of course it's my main screen, 2nd one doesn't have HDMI, so my connections are a bit fixed.

I have all 3 connected, but I have to shuffle out 1 then add the other in Screen Resolution to bring it up, assuming connected and ON.

Doesn't help you any, I realize, but you aren't the only with HDMI quirkiness going on.

I can solve both of our problems now!


For mine, I found that it was me using overscan that screwed things up. The tv is all 1080p, but the pc 1080p signal did not fill my tv screen. I tried making it a higher resolution, still caused issues. Then it dawned on me to let ny TV do the over scanning, it works lime a charm!


As for your issue, my gaming machine has two 7970 cards in crossfire. I have 6 monitors hooked up to one 7970 card right now (3 in eyefinity, 1 projector and two side monitors for tv, security cams, and pc temp monitoring.)

Your problem is that your card only has 2 dvi controllers. Your hdmi port is dvi, it just has audio. If you use a displayport with an adapter it will want to use a dvi controller UNLESS you get an ACTIVE mini displayport to dvi adapter. Get a couple, and a few displayport splitters, and your card should support 6 monitors.

My miniDP in use is a via miniDP to HDMI cable. ($12 from newegg)

I guess I didn't know about ACTIVE? The miniDP is worst excuse for a video port...?

Show me the newegg part please that I should be interested in.

That would work. That would allow you to use your mini displayport as a mini displayport.

Non active ones use the mini displayport as dvi, and like I said, your card only has 2 if them.

My kightning 7970 has 4 mini display ports abd 2 dvi. I had to buy 4 active adapters to run 6 monitors.
Yours probably has 2 mini display ports, but youbcan buy an adapter to split ghem into two.


The other option is to buy a monitor with display port on it, but good luck with that, they are expensive!

Mine is 2 miniDP, 1 DVI, 1 HDMI, it's really not supremely important that I get my TV hooked up to it 100% of time any way, it's awkward placement, 39" HDTV.

Thanks for the info, I'll probably just leave it as is and be mad at MSI for another reason.

I ordered that adaptor, then the next day newegg lowered the price on it and added a free HDMI cable

I have a FX8350 CPU coming too though! Just decided, the final motherboard upgrade, might as well get it done.

Lol, good luck! I know it will work out for you!

A little advice though, unless you NEED audio, I would stick with displayport to DVI adapters. HDMI is actually DVI with the audio piggy backed onto it, but with hdmi you might run into EDID issues, which are a pain in the neck.

Follow up, been running with 3 monitors now just fine with that adaptor for a few days, 39" HDTV is used for gadgets and one big browser window. Missed info on EDID with hdmi, but I am not having any issues at this time and my HDTV is only hdmi input.

For me, no useless, this 7950 has 2 miniDPs and I have nothing with a display port.

So using 1 miniDP, 1 DVI, 1 HDMI port on this card, just needed active miniDP adapter and the usual cables.
I am all fine and good with 3 monitors now, at a loss really how I lived with 1. :devil2:
