I am getting a complete freeze up, at random times, all I can do is hit the reset to force a restart.
This is what I have found in the event log

I have no idea what the driver or device is at the root of this so any help would be appreciated

Hi,

You might want to have a look at the following...It's based on the "\Driver\WUDFRd" error

Well... I had the same exact error, but it appears that some further reading is required. Read this: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/978977
If you have the Smart Card Reader or other "!" point for a related device, you may beed the associated HotFix... I did... Cleared up the "!" and the WUDFRd event...

Thanks, I have a smartcard reader and you are correct about that being the device that is the cause of my woes!
I am trying to find a 64bit driver (difficult) in the meantime I will disable the device and hopefully the freeze issue will stop.

What doesn't help is the Asus downloads page is down

Do you know the make and model of the reader?

Out of curiosity do you use the reader?

If not then disabling it would at leas add a temporary fix. Does Windows Update not offer any hardware updates, normally in Optional Updates?
