Ok, so i have a network through a netgear wireless router w/ 3 desktops and 1 laptop. The laptop and one of the desktops are running windows 7. The other two desktops have windows xp home. For a while I couldn't even get the win7 comps to see the win xp comps, but I dowloaded a "Link Layer Topology Responder" or whatever it's called. Now all of the computers can see each other. These are the computers...

1. XP - Can access all comps but #2
2. XP - Doesn't have permission to view network computers
3. 7 - Desktop - Can't access #1 or #2
4. 7 - Laptop - Can't access #1 or #2

not sure if that made any sense at all, but i hope it did (if not, ask questions). Please help me let all computers access shared files/printers on all other computers. Thanks!

Hi there,

Have a look at my sig for one type of networking.

You can choose to not have cable connections, in which case go wireless for all machines. all machines to connect to the wireless network, auto IP detect and bob's your uncle.

When setting up your network, please take note of the first line in my sig. :)

Where did you find info on the Link Layer Topology stuff? That should have been there by default. If it wasn't, then you have other issues that will need to be resolved.

The sharing of files, is simple, if all your machines are connected to the same network, testable by pinging. Then all there is left to do is create shares, map to them from and transfer files. Is this what you wanted?

They are a business workgroup... how would i go about pinging? when i say i needed the lltr i meant on the xp machines...

also, as far as i can tell, they are networked correctly, but when i look for shares in the xp machine (which there are), it says "you dont have permission. contact network admin"

How are you connecting to the shares? and what permissions are set on it?

On the win7 computers, do you have the folders that you want to share, selected as share with Everyone ? or a specific user ?

Hey guys, there's something that still has me concerned. He says he had to "download and install Link Layer Topology Responder". He shouldn't have had to do that. Maybe it's just me but that tells me the adapter may not have installed properly.

before i downloaded the lltr onto the xp machine, the xp machine could see the 7 machines, but not vice versa...

also, does it matter who the win 7 comp is sharing with? i have no trouble accessing the win 7 comp, just going from 7 to xp

and to try to connect to the shares i am going to start>control panel>network and internet>view network computers and devices>computer name

I don't understand why you would need to install lltr.

Can you screenshot your adapter's properties page, place where it lists ipv4, ipv6 etc.

Here is a post which should help.
