Hi I have a HP dv7 computer. 5 days ago I was doing a virus scan but it was going slow, so I closed the screen while it did that. 2 days ago I got on my computer and saw that my computer was dead. So I plugged in the charger and powered it on. When I powered it on it went to HP recovery stuff. I can't do a previous restore state because I don't have none save. I want to go back to the way it was so I can get my stuff back. So yesterday a friend of mine put windows 7 premium on and it started up fine but now I can't find my stuff. Can anyone help me please? I would like to find my stuff on premium or if someone knows how I can fix my computer back to the way it was can they help with that.

Hello ANewandBetterMe. Welcome to the forum.

I regret to inform you that when your friend installed Windows on the computer that the C: drive was formatted in preparation for the install by default. This means your data on the C: drive was erased.

If you had other partitions on the machine, D: E:, etc, and your data was saved on one of those then you should have access to it. But if you just had one big C: drive then you are out of luck.

Please folks, backup your data. Never keep all your eggs in one basket.

The program may work, however, I'm not sure if formatting the partition has completely deleted your data or just hidden it from the operating system.

Hope this helps,

Harry

You can use a program like RECUVA to see if it can find the data on the disk and reconstitute it back to usable files. This will only be possible if the sectors that contained the original data have not been overwritten with new data. But it might be worth a try anyway.

Or you can spend a lot of money to a data recovery company to see if they can reconstitute it.

I have a program called Icare. Would that work the same?
