Hey Guys,

Just wondering if anyone can help....

I am running Windows 7 64 Bit,yesterday I ran chkdsk on a reboot took awhile to finish and cleared a couple of file errors but after the windows logo screen all that comes up is a black screen with the mouse...I am trying everything at the moment but nothing is working....

Cant do a system restore as there is no restore points, tried a startup repair 3 times, unplugged all extra's,99% sure had no virus's or malware, didnt install new hardware.

One thing I notice is that when I try to do a sfc/scannow in cmd prompt it says there is a task waiting on a restart but I cant do that cause I cant get into windows not even in safe mode, gives the black screen aswell...Cant do a repair install either as that has to be done from within windows....

I'd appreciate if anyone had any ideas guys pullin my hair out at the moment....

At work if we get the KSOD (Black Screen of Death) and don't have any restore points - we do diagnostics and then wipe the hard drive and reinstall windows.

H/W Diagnostics:
Please start by running these bootable hardware diagnostics:
Memory Diagnostics (read the details at the link)
HD Diagnostic (read the details at the link)

Thanks Usasma,

Gonna try those now, have tried the hard drive diag's already an they are all clear...re-installing windows is the last avenue I wanna try...surely there's a better fix.....using a boot disc to get in to check everything and all seems fine from there obviously there is something causing the boot up to fail....ever since the damn chkdsk this is happening ,startup is also giving a report that the volume is corrupt an that a patch is preventing startup......

Were you able to fix the problem?

I started up my computer this morning with the same problem. Black screen in normal and safe mode, no restore points, and the same 2 errors saying a patch is preventing the system from starting and the volume is corrupt.

Hey Jkh,

Indeed it was a sticky one I think I spent nearly a full week at it as I didnt want to re-install but in the end I did get it sorted.I tried numerous things...one of the things I tried which I think had an effect was the startup repair on the windows repair disk, even though on a couple of occasions it did say it didnt find any problems the more times I tried it it started to find problems. All in all I must have ran it at least 20 times over the week.

Secondly, I downloaded the Ultimate boot cd for windows...even though its kinda supposed to be for older versions of windows it still worked for me , I used it a couple of times also. There is a tool on it for restoring the registry startup files to an earlier date ,that is where the problem lies as far as I could see with this error...I also ran this numerous times...

I would start with those 2 for the time being....

Looks like a reinstallation is the only alternative then really!

If you need to back up files you can attach a external hdd and load notepad from within the winRE using command prompt! This will get you a notepad page where you can click file and then open. You basically within this window, copy your files from your C drive to your external drive!

Hope another alternative comes up though in the mean time from another more experience poster than me! :)
