help! total n00b.

here's my story:

I just bought an Acer netbook about two months ago. it came with XP and I'm not too happy with it. Not that XP is bad or anything, I just wanted something newer, like Vista.

Well, I always have to update things and see new things so it's about time I get a new OS on here and I want Seven. Some friends of mine have brought up the fact that most new computers come with Vista (previous to Seven coming out) and I should look into seeing if Windows can upgrade me to Vista for a discounted, if not free, price seeing as my computer is brand new.

Another friend mentioned to me that I can get an upgrade from XP to Seven for around $10 and when I researched that, I saw that it was an upgrade from Vista to Seven that was that much.

Now, I'm a student so I can get Windows 7 for about $30 which I'm willing to pay but I just wasn't sure if I missed something and there is a way to get an upgrade for being stuck with XP.

If anyone knows anything, please let me know, as I'm about to purchase it for the student price in a few hours.

Vista was never offered on Netbooks....hence the reason that it came with XP. Vista was simply too much of a resource hog to run on netbook computers. You can however switch to Windows 7 if you are interested...it's much easier on resources.

so you suggest I do in fact get 7? I don't want it to be "too much" on my little netbook. but I want it oh so badly.

Better do the scan for compatability with your Acer netbook first

You can move from XP directly to Windows 7. You don't have to go to Vista first.

You will have to do a "clean install" aka "custom install" rather than an upgrade.

You should run Windows compatibility advisor to find out if your machine will support 7. It probably will.
