Hi,

I'm operating on Windows Vista 64-bit Home Premium. I asked 2 computer techs that I know which version of Windows to buy. They both said the upgrade is good. I downloaded the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor and it told me that my pc was capable of using the upgrade too. So I bought the Windows 7 Professional upgrade, which says on the corner "designed for Windows Vista". It will not install. It begins to install and then gives me a message that I'm not compatible and won't go any further.

Any ideas anyone?

Thank you

Did you try a clean install with the 64-bit version of the Windows 7 upgrade disc?

Standard method:

Back up all your data, bookmarks, email

Set your PC to boot from DVD drive first

Put DVD in drive

Restart, you should boot from the install disc.

Choose Custom Install

Choose "drive options/advanced" at the partition screen.

Delete all partitions at the next screen

Make new partitions as desired.

Choose which new partition you want to put Win 7 on

Continue to finish

Update Windows

Re-install your programs and restore your data

Microsoft doesn't permit an upgrade-in-place from Vista Home Premium to Win7 Pro.

You can, however, do a custom (clean) install. That'll basically wipe everything from the Vista installation, though.

The good news is that a clean install is recommended anyway, to give the best chance of a stable Win7 installation.

Hi, thanks for the replies.

Are you positive that I can do a clean install with the upgrade? I called my computer guy for some answers and he told me that I'd need to buy the full version. I'm only questioning him becuz his way is the "only way" according to him :D

Clean will delete everything from your computer. Upgrade, but it's not possible from Windows Vista Home Premium to Windows 7 Professional.

Yes, you can clean install with Upgrade version, in fact you must do so in the case of XP.

Back up your files, gather your program installers/disks then:

Either boot from the DVD and format the drive first, then install..

Or run the DVD from Vista and choose Custom install, which will place your files in a Windows.old folder for later retrieval.

Either way, the DVD will scan the HD to see the Vista and allow you to insert Upgrade key.

Hello and welcome. Surprisingly you can perform the full "CLEAN" installation from the "Upgrade" Version.

Ok, thanks everyone.

I'll back up my pc and give it a try, but probably not for a few weeks.

I'm going to MISS Windows Mail. I despise online email. I don't even understand why they wouldn't offer windows mail anymore. It seems dumb to me.

Now I'm off to ATI's webbie to find out if my Radeon x1950 will be ok with Windows 7, which I should have done before purchasing Windows 7. Ya think? lol

Well, let me ask opinions. Should I stay with Vista for awhile (since we're used to all the security nonsense) or head to 7? Is 7 awesome? Originally Windows 7 was *only* purchased due to .... a computer game conflict. Now the computer game issue has been fixed so we've wasted the money for 7 for nothing. Now since we have 7, though, we're thinking just get it on.

Bypass Vista and get it on. Win 7 is more of a refined Vista. It won't confuse you much at all.

First run the upgrade advisor here

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-7/get/system-requirements.aspx

If you have a fairly recent PC (several years old), you should be good to go.

For email, you can choose Windows Live Mail, Thunderbird, or others.

Make sure everything is backed up before you begin.

If you decide to wipe the HD and fully embrace the future now, you might want to backup windows/system32/drivers and /driverstore so that if any drivers are missing when you open your Device Manager, you can browse to those folders to retrieve them.

The Win7 installer is surprisingly driver-complete, thanks to MS funding the WHQL partnership with all manufacturers to build drivers for Win7. Since MS paid the bill, they set the deadlines and have them first - in the installer, during install by staying connected to internet, and from Windows Updates.

There is absolutely no comparison between Vista and Win7. It is not only the best OS ever, feather-light yet fast as lightning, but is IMO the greatest invention since the computer.

Windows Live Mail is essentially the same product with a few visual differences. Give it a try.
