Hello,
I use a seagate SATA hard disk as a master disk where i have my OS installed etc. and a WD IDE disk as slave where i usually keep files like mp3s, movies and so on.
As long as I had windows xp everything worked fine.

I installed Windows 7 yesterday on the SATA disk, and now i can't see the IDE slave on windows 7. The BIOS (ASUS P5GD1-VM) detects him perfectly fine, but when i log into windows 7 i can't see it in My Computer, Disk manager or device manager.

Is there any solution to this?
Thanks in advance.

Welcome!

Change the IDE drive to Master, unless you have more than one on the same cable. I'm not aware of a difference in the way Windows 7 detects IDE drives vs. XP, but try that.

This is interesting... I'm really curious. Please let us know. I currently have one IDE DVD burner which is set as master since it's the only one connected to the cable. Do you have any other devices on that cable?

For those reading this in the future, here is the reply:

SATA doesnt work on master and slave idea, so set the IDE to MASTER

Could we have a slave without a master in XP? I never had it set up that way so I'm not really sure... but I'd assume this was the case in XP as well.

No. You always have to have a Master first, then a slave. However, there is CS for cable select - where both drives have the jumper set to CS, and the master and slave are determined by the position of the drive on the cable. Opposite end from the motherboard is the master, the one in the middle is the slave.

It has nothing to do with XP, BTW - that is established well before the hard drive is touched, and before the OS is loaded.

Is there another way? My Sata has the window and I do not want to format my IDE when it has all the music and lots of important stuff. I worked be4 until I was fixing my comp and pulled the IDE HD out.

Sounds like a BIOS setting needs to be changed - Legacy PATA needs to be enabled if disabled or else vice versa (disabled if enabled) for Win 7 to see the drives.

Unfortunately, I have never tried to use both SATA and IDE in the same machine....

Inmate - you need to start your own thread with your own problem to avoid confusion for this thread's OP and responders.
