Hello!

I just did format my computer so I can install Windows 7 on a empty pc.
I entered the cd-rom to install windows 7 but I keeps staying on unpack at 0%. It's been there for almost 1 hour now.. I keep starting stressed it isn't gonna work anymore.
Anybody knows if this is normal and if I should wait? Or what I should do?

Thanks!

What are the spec's for your computer? If you have minimum RAM and a slow processor, it can take a long time to unpack the installation files.

If a friend gave you a hacked CD/DVD, that may be your problem. You need a valid Microsoft Install DVD & an a Valid Key Code ;)

Note above

To clarify though, was the version of the windows 7 ultimate a full version or Upgrade version?

When you stated you upgraded from Vista, it went fine, but didn't state if it was a full or upgraded version and you are now starting from literal scratch to install it.

Another question to help clarify things carefully is how far into the installation does it go. I have only installed win 7 twice, and forgetting at which point it will go through the process of unpacking files, but majority of the concerns is at what point of the install it seems to fail.

How do you plan to activate WIn7?

You said you used the same DVD to upgrade before, but perhaps it has gotten dirty since then or needs to be burned again using ImgBurn at 4x speed which never fails. The error appears to be a DVD read error.

Failure to unpack at 0% can also be existing OS or HD:
Try wiping the HD before install: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/91339-ssd-hdd-optimize-windows-reinstallation.html
Test the HD using maker's full diag/repair CD scan: http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=287
Boot Win7 DVD, press Shift F10 to open command line, type chkdsk /r to run http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/433-disk-check.html

Make sure you have the latest BIOS update from the Dell Support Downloads webpage for your tag number. If so, reset the CMOS: Clear CMOS - 3 Ways to Clear the CMOS - Reset BIOS

Check the SATA controller setting in BIOS setup. Set to AHCI first, then IDE if necessary.

Remove all but 2gb of RAM to try install. Test your RAM using memtest86 CD for 5-6 passes. Swap, reseat your RAM.
