Solved Help with activation.

Hiya,

We have a machine at work which originally had windows 7 64bit home installed on it. We upgraded via the upgrade assistant thing to professional for office use. The upgrade assistant gave us a new activation code.

I was wondering if I can use the original disk and original activation code to install on a separate machine at home which I have recently upgraded to a 64 bit system - will the os activate?

I thought it would be a good idea to check if this is possible rather than go right ahead and purchase a new 64 bit os for my new home system. Maybe it is a call to Microsoft?

Hello Quantumk, and welcome to Seven Forums.

Sorry, but no. Since this is an upgrade copy and not a full retail copy purchased, it would violate the EULA to continue using the product key of the Windows you upgraded from.

In addition, if the 64-bit Windows 7 Home Premium came preinstalled on an OEM computer, then you will also not be able to activate it's key on another computer since it is permanently tied to the motherboard of the OEM computer and will not activate on any other computer or motherboard.

I'm a little unclear abut the situation with your home system....

What was the original OS?
If it was Windows 7 Home Premium 32-bit - and you simply want the 64-bit version, then you can clean-install that using your existing Key from the COA sticker (assuming the system has the appropriate drivers - check the manufacturer's website)

He wanted to use the 64-bit Windows 7 Home Premium OS from their office OEM PC that they upgrade to the professional edition, and install the old OEM 64-bit Windows 7 Home Premium OS from on his PC at home.
