Help with CPU's

so im just curios, but what CPU would be best for primarily gaming, then HD video rendering, then web browsing and youtube?

also, is is there any other CPU's out there that support PGA988 socket? or is it only the 1st gen intel CPU's?

At the moment only a few games actually use/support more than 2 cores so for gaming most would probably recommend the i7-640M. Both would be more than enough for the other things you mentioned. Having said that, I would for sure get the most power you could afford. I personally like the quad cores because....... well, lol, I plan on keeping my machine for awhile and you never know whats coming down the pike as far as programs/games.

thats what i was thinking, but because the base frequency of the quad core is lower, that means it will rely on turbo boost a lot to achieve 3ghz. so i would imagine that would reduce performance instead of increase it

Yep I am with Indy on that the four core has more cache and better memory specs too the only thing is it runs 45 watts as opposed to 35 watts.

As for the turbo boost well much of a muchness really when you are running four cores unless I am terribly mistaken.

the more cores that are running, the less the turbo boost is.

my i5 is clocked at 2.6ghz base, and 3.2ghz turbo. however, eaither 1 core or 1 thread has to be parked for it to reach that 3.2ghz. if all cores and threads are turned on, the max it will go is 2.93hz turbo or somewhere in that means. it does not break 2.93 though
