I use Firefox (ver 23). One of my favorite shopping sites recently changed one of their website features and it in no longer usable to me. The show a group of 8-10 "sales" with a link to each. BEFORE - I could click on one link and just view those items. NOW - I click on a link and those items load on my page, followed by the next group, and the next group and so on, filling my screen with pages full of crap. I noticed this little spinning icon that pops up briefly as the next sale group of items floods my scree.

How to I make that stop? I've spent hours trying to turn off autoscrolling, I turned off shockwave flash, and I'm at the end of my ropes here!

CAN ANYONE PLEASE HELP? I'm really desperate!
Thanks

May I have the address of the site? I promise that I won't judge; I'll keep this strictly professional. I want to see if it does the same thing to me in all of my browsers, including Firefox 22 and also Firefox UX Nightly 25.0a1.

Not a problem. The link is
Daily Sales | Wayfair.com – Furniture on Sale, Home Decor Deals, and more.
When the page loads you'll see about 20 or so "boxes" that link to products that are on sale. Previously clicking on one box only displayed those items....now you'll notice that as you scroll down the page (after loading a link) that the page will keep filling with all of the events one after another.

Thanks for taking a look!

I figured it out! (this post is a lot longer than it needs to be, but you'll see why I typed so much lol)

This can only be done in NoScript by choosing "Forbid wfrcdn.com" ("cdn" stands for Content Delivery Network). I tried blocking it by adding it to my Hosts file instead using "127.0.0.1 wfrcdn.com", but it didn't work. So with it blocked in NoScript, the first 5 boxes on the page you linked me to show up and the rest are blank. Right above the first blank box is a text link that says "show all images" (this is easy to miss because it's just plain text and it's not very big). You can click blank boxes and they still work, but of course it helps to see what you're clicking instead of having to read each one. lol Anyway, when you click one of those boxes, the next page shows up with only the first 12 boxes showing and the rest are blank. Underneath these first 12 boxes is a nice button that you will not be able to miss that reads "SHOW ALL IMAGES" (in all caps lol). When you click this, it just loads the blank boxes and that's it! I mean, the best part is no extra content, not even if you scroll down a million times! This is because wfrcdn.com is blocked.

Y'know, I agree with you: that extra content is stupid and it results in unrelated content being shown. lol However, it looks like they're just trying to make it more convenient so that you don't have to go back to that page you linked me to in order to see what else is on there, but the stupid thing is that you have to keep scrolling and scrolling and scrolling and scrolling just to see the others - and the worst part is the contents of the others are loaded too. It just makes me want to e-mail them with something like "what were you thinking?!" lol I mean, I'd much rather see nothing but what I clicked on and then be forced to click back to go look at the other boxes. Good grief they're stupid. lol

Anyway, if you didn't have NoScript before, then you'll need to know something: every page you visit that your current installation of NoScript has not been exposed to yet will need to have its permissions set exactly like you did for Wayfair.com (it's always a "set it and forget it" type of thing). However, I like this because then I get to only load what's necessary in order to get the page to work. You will find that almost every site has unnecessary things that do not need to be allowed by NoScript in order to function at 100%. It's almost hilarious.

There is a file or two in the default profile folder for Firefox that keeps everything for NoScript. So, if you copy/paste the entire contents of the default profile folder to a safe place, then you get to format, start over, install Firefox, open Firefox, close Firefox, copy/paste the files you copied before into the new default profile folder, open Firefox, and then be back up and running like you never formatted. As far as NoScript is concerned, all of your page permissions will still be there including any customizations you made to it. You won't have to start over, not for anything in Firefox. Not even about:config tweaks. You'll even still have your Extensions! You'll have to reinstall your plugins though because those get installed into Windows, not into Firefox like the Extensions.

So yeah, NoScript!

TwoCables - you're my new hero! I just installed NoScript 2.6.6.6 - of course now I have to figure out how to use it. This one website was my biggest annoyance, to the point that I even called them and complained to their customer support group. In fairness, even the customer support rep that I talked to agreed with me, but she told me that their "engineering team" redesigned the site specifically to behave that way. I suppose the easiest thing for me was to just quit shopping on that site, but that's another issue! Thanks again!

You're welcome! NoScript is my hero, so... :)

If you have any questions about NoScript, then I'll be here to answer them to the best of my ability. I've been using NoScript for at least 3-4 years now if not longer, so I feel that I should be able to answer most questions on it.

wow! I might just be asking you questions. All I did was install NoScript and at first I didn't see where the icon went (that showed me NoScript was installed. I just went to the Wayfair site and it only opened one "event" box. I wish more people would complain to Wayfair, then maybe they would restore it back to the way it was. I know I'm stubborn but even when I tried to convince myself that the change was an improvement, I just couldn't find enough "pros" - it was just a mess. Anyway....I'm on my way out so I won't be experimenting with NoScript tonight. Hopefully I'll get the hang of it. Later......

Oh yeah it normally goes on the Add-on Bar. It should also be in the main context menu (right-click a neutral space any web page). You should also be able to add a button for it on the Toolbar (like right next to the Location Bar or the Search box).

So when you went to Wayfair's site, did you have to set any permissions? If so, then do you remember what you told NoScript to allow? I'm assuming that you only told it to allow Wayfair.com and nothing else (which is good). That's pretty much all you have to do for most sites. Sometimes you'll have to carefully look at the list to see what might need to be allowed in order to make the site function as you want or need it to. Usually, this should be done by saying "Temporarily allow" for the server name in question just to see if that makes it work.

If you don't want it telling you that elements are blocked, then that can be changed in NoScript's options in the Notifications tab. You can also get NoScript to stop reloading automatically whenever you change permissions by disabling the option in the General tab.

Really though, I recommend going through every little part of NoScript's options to see what you can change. I left many things alone because I didn't know what to do with them, but there are still obvious things - things you know you'll want to change just by the name of the option or setting!

ARGH! Hey TwoCables, it looks like Wayfair strikes again, and must have done more changes to their site. Background - my original fix was to follow your instructions and install NoScript. As soon as loaded that to Firefox the DailySales did exactly as you described (the first half dozen items would show up followed by a "link" to load all images). It worked like that ever since...until yesterday. Now all I get is a complete blank page that sits for minutes "loading" nothing. I've been trying to muddle through NoScript for the past hour and the best I've been able to get is a page of text with blank image boxes. But when I click on the blank image boxes nothing loads.

Anyway....I'll be trying to figure this out. My son gets home from Boston this afternoon so I might not be around much this evening until late. I'm sure I'll be trying to figure this out for the next few days.

Thanks in advance for giving this another look.

So...I removed NoScripts, rebooted, then reloaded NoScripts and GOOD NEWS is that I have the site working as per your fix (at least as far as I can tell).

Now I have to go back through my other websites to see if I have other problems to take care of.

NoScripts is a great tool, but gees...now that I see how convoluted websites are, with all the links to ads, counters, and data mining sites it makes me cringe!

Yeah, I fell in love with NoScript very quickly when I discovered all of the garbage on every site. lol

Regarding what happened to you just now though: omg. What the hell happened? lol That's the only reaction I can have because I've never had to reinstall NoScript.

Every "new" site that I visit, the first thing I do is find out how much I can "forbid" before the site breaks. hehe Sometimes I can forbid everything but the main site. lol

However, and this can be a big one: watch out when ordering things on the internet. Pay close attention to the NoScript icon. The first time I ordered something after installing NoScript, I had to allow an extra server or 2 when checking out and once while submitting an order. lol So there are times, depending on my mood, where if I'm ordering from a new site, I might just choose "Allow Scripts Globally (dangerous)" and then begin placing my order. lol Other times I have a little more energy or something and I watch NoScript every step of the way.

Anyway, I'm glad that it seems to have been nothing. It could have even been a server error on their end, meaning that it could have been totally unrelated to NoScript.

The real reason I did the reinstall is frustration - I had this pull down menu of dozens of forbidden links on that site and after wasting more then an hour and not getting anywhere I decided that maybe starting over was the easiest option., Of course I didn't think about the fact that I had already applied different levels of NoScript to a countless number of sites!

I wondered about the "time lag" when I was ordering stuff - in fact the first time I tried to make an online purchase I had to keep adding "temporary allows" to finally make a purchase. That's another of those learning curve things I need to spend time on, since the temporary allows go away after I close the sites down. Right now my brain doesn't seem to have the capacity to remember what I'm learning (and writing stuff down is too hard thanks to a stupid injury - I partially severed my index finger so after the emergency surgery 8 days ago it's in a cast). ARGH!

Take care!

Hmm. I only use Temporarily Allow for things I'm not sure of but want to know if there's any reason I need them. If I discover I need them, then I make the permissions permanent. If I discover that I don't, then I revoke the temporary permissions. I never use Temporarily Allow when I'm making purchases because that would mean that I'd have to temporarily allow that server or those servers every time.
