Hi guys and girls,

I require help with an installation of windows 7. I recently purchase a secondhand laptop for my Son which had windows 7 on it only to find it was a illegal copy. I have now purchased a legal copy and tried to install it without no luck. I wiped the drive in the laptop to do a clean install and then put the disk in, 64 bit version, to find the dvd rom doesn't spin as if reading the disk. It says couldn't find the driver, then the option is to browse either the pc or disk for the required driver to which i have no clue. Can anyone help me with this problem as it's baffling me as to why i can not just install the legal copy of windows 7 home premium onto a cleaned hard drive.

Please help me or point me in the right direction.

Many thank

Citylady

I think I have solved it all by myself. I copied all the contents from the legal disk onto and external hard drive and then entered the set up on the laptop and now it's installing the new version over the illegal copy. I will just delete the windows.old file when fully installed.

If it's not right to do that can someone please say? I will keep you posted on how it's going.

Hello CityLady.

It would be best to do a wipe (secure erase) to the entire Hard Disk Drive to completely over-write any malicious code that may have been inbedded in the old 'illegal' version, what you are doing will leave any of that code in-place; have a look at this tutorial at the link below.

SSD / HDD : Optimize for Windows Reinstallation

Then do a clean install with the new Windows 7 DVD.

How to Do a Clean Installation with Windows 7

Also, are you sure you were booting the Windows 7 DVD correctly? You shouldn't need to add any drivers as the Windows 7 installer is driver-complete.

Hi there and thank you for your response, I have got windows to install now but one driver still missing under other devices is a yellow exclamation mark with coprocessor when I try to update the driver it says cannot find the driver. I think this is what is causing the problem. I went to nvidia.com to locate a driver and when i installed it it told me it's not compatible this after i did the required specs scan to see what driver was needed.when i put a disk in the dvd rom it runs it just not the legal copy of my recently purchased windows 7

That missing co-processor driver is remedied by importing the Nvidia chipset from Nvidia's website or the Support Downloads webpage for your computer model.

Keep a close eye on optional Windows Updates as this is where Win7 delivers newer drivers - MS spent a fortune getting Win7 drivers in installer or quickly delivered via Updates and hardware updating which you can enable here: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/...mmended-drivers-and-updates-for-your-hardware

If you have problems finding out which chipset you have, running Belarc Advisor system audit can help as well as provide a complete audit of your hardware and software including installed keys. Otherwise post back your exact make and model and we will help you find it.

this is the problem driver

%SystemRoot%\system32\setupapi.dll-18

That is what i find when i right click on coprocessor and then properties, details this is what shows in the text box. I have googled this text and it says it can be found on the system files on the disk but I cannot find them and wouldn't know where to put them either if I did. So you think i need to download from Nvidia?

ok here are my specs...

OS windows 7 home premium 64bit

NVIDIA GeForce 6100 [Display adapter]
Acer AC711 [Monitor] (16.3"vis, s/n ES7083270030D, July 2003)

Processor a Main Circuit Board b
2.00 gigahertz AMD Athlon 64
256 kilobyte primary memory cache
512 kilobyte secondary memory cache

CD-ROM Drive
HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-4167B [CD-ROM drive]
3.5" format removeable media [Floppy drive]

Board: Gigabyte Technology Co., Ltd. GA-K8N51GMF-9
Bus Clock: 200 megahertz
BIOS: Award Software International, Inc. F4 03/09/2006

Just a note that maybe worth mentioning is, I can put any other dvd in the DVDrom and it works but when I put the legal copy of windows 7 in the DVDrom no go at all....not even to read the disk

regards

Hazel

Hi Hazel,

Can the Windows 7 disk you bought be read on another DVD drive? Say on your PC?

The chipset drivers on Gigabyte site are pretty old. You can try to see if the co-processor will pick up a driver from the extracted file, but I would hesitate installing the full chipset if there are not performance problems related to this. GIGABYTE GA-K8N51GMF-9 | Emaplaadid - Driver

Yes I can read the disk on my pc just not the laptop....If I put a movie in the laptop it plays no worries. the only dosk that doesn't work is the legal copy of windows 7. I put it in my pc and viewed the files no problem as I too thought there may be a problem with the disk.

Hi guys and girls,
~snip~
the dvd rom doesn't spin as if reading the disk.

All other DVDs/CDs work fine in the laptop? to me it sounds like it might be failing. But maybe the W7 DVD is funny .. I'd try and copy it on y our desktop, and then see if the laptop can read it.

Ok I have located the driver and installed it now the coprocessor is fine again and i cannot find the right nvidia driver for the laptop, I put in the series of card and model and then it gave me a driver to download and install which i tried several times only for it to say not compatible. i have definatley put the right graphics card in and tried 4 times downloading a file 128mbs Windows has installed no problem from the external hard drive and programs download and install no worries even from Disk. I even tried my Pc's legal copy of windows 7 to see if the laptop would be able to read it and no joy with that either.

I am just worried now in case i need to do a repair from the disk which it will not read on the laptop.

Any suggestions?

all I feel is wrong now is the fact the dvd rom will not read either of the two copies of legal windows 7 home premium 64 bit. I just recently watched a movie from disk and no problem reading it i have also installed from disk photo shop elements 9 and no problems there either.

I am a little concerned to what i am about to write here now.

When I open computer management and it show the drives on the laptop it has on the c drive and 8gig block then another part which is the remainder of the C:\\ drive then it has disk 2 but i don't have a disk two we not yet anyway i have another hard drive for it but it's not installed. Then i have dvd rom which is the (D) drive if i right click it to populate it, it doesn't do anything. Pluse the drive letter changes to (F) sometimes and I have to go back and change the drive path from F back to D. Can anyone tell me why would this happen and could it be the reason why the windows disks are not able to be read by the dvd rom.

Regards

Hazel

Try booting the DVD: How to Boot your Computer from a Bootable CD or DVD

If it will boot and load, you can choose to reinstall if you have performance issues. If not, you'll know you have an installer to use for Repairs or to reinstall from boot,.

In fact, test the Repair console by opening it on the second screen to see if it locates your intallation and finds anything to repair. If not, close out and reboot.
