Help with over clocking my i7 930 in my Asus

As u can probably tell, I'm in the process of trying to find a constant and quick overclocked speed for my i7 930. I currently am running it at 3.87 just before I left work and haven't done a stress test on it yet. I've read that is better to keep the voltage at stock settings when overclocking which wasn't done by myfriend that was helping me. So he set it at 1.27500 or something like that. I know it was 1.275 that I typed in as directed. Did a two hour full load test and it didnt crash or anything. I go to play a game last night, it crashed the whole pc, got the blue physical memory dump screen, or the start up screen said IOH is over temp. Went through the settings again and knocked it down to 160 and lowered the voltage. Now the game freezes and pc doesn't even respond to Ctrl Alt Delete to go to task manager to close out so I have to shut down the whole pc and start up windows in order to go back into the game. My specs are as follows:
Intel i7 930 2.8
Coolmaster case
Coolmaster V8 heat sink
Asus rampage 3
Nvidia Geforce GTX 470
9 gb of memory
750 watt power supply

Your best bet is to go to a Asus motherboard forum and post the same message. While this is a great forum with extremely helpful members, nothing beats the information you would get in the specialized forum. In the meantime reset the voltage to its original level while reducing the overclock (frequency/Blck). I presume you are monitoring your CPU core temperatures. While the i7 has thermal overload protection, you can still damage your system.best of luck

I dont know what your friend did, but reset your BIOS and start overclocking it correctly, if at all.

I believe that this link may help you in your quest, although I much prefer using the Prime 95 Blend test for testing stablity. 10 hours of that and your good to go.

Thanks for everyones input n help. I took the temp back down and got the CPU comfortably at 3.89 for the time being. Gonna attempt to raise to 4.1 tomorrow n if it crashes, keep going down til it runs my MOD game without issues. Again, thank u to all!

If you do overvolt your processor, personally I would avoid going over 1.35v which is what mine is set to. I have my i7 920 at 3.9 GHz with no stability issues at the moment. When overclocking you may want to first raise your base clock to as high as you can get it without crashing. If it isn't fast enough then, raise the voltage slightly until you can get your processor to the speed you want it at. Just be aware that overvolting can harm components if you over do it. It also will most likely void any warranties.

I run my Asus and i7-860 at 4.2 24/7. max temps with prime95 were 84'C and that was when it tested with the lower numbers. (not sure why only the lower numbers in Blend). Ambient temps were 24'C
I am happy with my OC.

I presume that the 84°C refers to CPU core temperatures and not CPU temperature. If so, enjoy your OC. If not dialback.
