Did you go from a total of 1 GB ram to a total of 4 GB ram??
I wouldn't be surprised if you don't notice a difference or only rarely notice a difference. For all I know, your system never used all of the original 1 GB. If that were the case, moving up to 4 is not going to help.
Did you use the CPU/RAM gadget available from the start menu to track your CPU and RAM usage? If not, you can start now. If you see RAM usage under 25% or so with 4 GB installed, that means you have 3 GB unused. If you regularly see RAM usage above 25%, that would mean you are getting into the new RAM.
I have 4 GB installed and rarely see 30% RAM usage.
