Solved Help with RAM info please

Have a Compaq CQ61 here at the moment and it it has 2GB Kingston PC-6400S stick in it. Now I want to up it to 4GB but cannot find out from local dealers or Google what the "S" stands for as I found 2GB DDR2 RAM in PCCG but it doesn't mention the "S" in the description.
Can someone please let me know what the S means and / or if the PCCG item will work OK in the machine with the Kingston stick? If the S means I have to get one with an S on it – would I be better off getting two non "S" sticks as a kit (second ref).

My guess would be, after checking to make sure this is a laptop/netbook, that the S stands for so-dimm, which is memory for laptops and netbooks. After looking as both your links, it says so-dimm right there, so there you have it. It's just an abrevreation for so-dimm is all.

Thanks Bassfisher yeah mate it is a laptop and I pulled out the original stick this morning and that's what it had on it - PC-6400S.

Don't know why they had to add the S really as it's pretty obvious the stick is meant for a laptop and not a desktop. Well thats presuming someone daft enough would try I suppose eh? lol!

You'd be surprised at what people will do in the IT world. I thought I had seen it all until I took my A+ certification class and started doing jobs on the side....Funny stuff is all I can say.

I think you are right. Looks like D suffix for DIMM and S prefix for SODIMM.

Some manufacturers use those codes for different reasons. I had the same issue with G Skill ram. I was told that the S stood for single and the D stood for dual. Meaning they were bought with a single stick in a package (S) or D was a 2 stick package.
