Help with Start menu problem.

This is aggravating but not debilitating. When I click on the Windows logo for the Start menu, the left pane is not populated as it once was. The "search programs and files" box is intact and the "All Programs" logo is there, but there are no programs listed. They will all appear however, when I click the "All Programs" logo. I have honestly looked for an answer, but nothing that seems to mimic my particular problem. Any help will be most appreciated.
