Help with the MigRecover.exe program please

I would like to ask for some help with the MigRecover.exe program.

Following a failed attempt to upgrade my PC from XP to 7 (7 couldn't find my graphics card) I have reinstalled XP. I now have all of my personal data locked into a file called "Windows Easy Transfer - Items from old computer.MIG"

I have found a copy of MigRecover.exe on Pirate Bay and I am trying to extract my data using the instructions in the readme file. I did not use a password during the creation of the MIG file.

Here is what I have tried in the command prompt... First attempt

C:\MigRecover>migrecover.exe g:\richard pc\windows easy transfer - items from ol
d computer.mig c:\migrecover\recover

A utility to recover files from a Windows Easy Transfer or USMT archives.

Syntax:

MigRecover.exe <source MIG file> <destination path> [password]

Where:

<source MIG file> - the full path to the MIG file you need to recover files fr
om
<destination path> - the path where the tool should unpack the recovered files
[password] - the password used to encrypt the store (if any)

Second Attempt using <>

C:\MigRecover>migrecover.exe <g:\richard pc\windows easy transfer - items from o
ld computer.mig> <c:\migrecover\recover>
< was unexpected at this time.

Third attempt, I renamed the .MIG file to a shorter name "savedata.mig"

C:\MigRecover>MigRecover.exe G:\Richard PC\savedata.mig C:\migrecover\recover
Error while trying to open the source MIG file. Error: 0x00000002

Can anyone tell me where I am going wrong, and what I should be doing. I would really appreciate any help, this file has 5 years of photos including our wedding pictures and other valuable information.

I think I have found the solution to my problem. The path of the .MIG file must be inside "" to work

So to get it to work I typed the following at the command prompt

MigRecover.exe "G\Richard PC\Windows Easy Transfer - Items from old computer.MIG" C:\MigRecover\recover

The file is now extracting as I write this message

New problem

Error while creating the destination file: C:\MigRecover\recover\File\D:\.......

I get this error for every single file that MigRecover.exe tries to extract

I think the new problem is due to the name of the destination file. Specifically trying to create a folder called "D:" because the : is not an allowable character.

Does anyone know of a way to change the name of the destination file that migrecover.exe creates? Is there a way to automatically remove the : from the file name?

I am sorry I do not have any experience of using the command prompt so I don't know if this is a silly question or not.

I don't know the program, but you could try:

MigRecover.exe "G:\Richard PC\Windows Easy Transfer - Items from old computer.MIG" C:\MigRecover\recover\

Thank you for the reply, I am afraid that the typo that you spotted was just a mistake I made while typing my previous post.

I had actually typed the command as you correctly suggested.

The file I am trying to extract was created by Windows Easy Transfer to move all of my settings and personal files from XP to Win 7.

I think the problem is the program is trying to create a file name that contains the : character, for example.

C:\MigRecover\recover\File\C:\Documents and settings......

I was wondering if there was a way to automatically change the output to remove the :

Has anyone found a solution to the problem? Due to some incompatiliby problems, I was forced to migrate back to WIndows XP Pro. Now I'm at a loss when it comes to recovering all my data from the MIG file. The additional memory stick backup of the most vital data has turned up to be tottaly corrupt and I'm desperate. I'd be really grateful for any software or step-by-step guide.

I just got MigRecover.exe to work pulling my data from a "corrupt" *.mig file created while migrating from Windows 8 to Windows 7 (we'll not cover the why, most of you would know). I did NOT put a drive letter (with the colon ":") as it seems that will cause to process to fail. If you are running MigRecover on the same drive you want the recover folder built on (this is the way it should be done anyway) the program will automatically supply the drive letter. I only typed the following at the command prompt:
MigRecover.exe SaveData.MIG \MigRecover\recover
It immediately started running (the very first file was corrupt but turned out to be a non-issue as I had another backup). MigRecover will actually create the folder for recovered data if the one you type does not already exist.

I have tried every way mentioned above to solve this riddle. Nothing has worked. I keep getting

error while creating the destination file
followed by whatever destination I put into the syntax followed by the file's opriginal pathname ( D:\2017\File....)

maybe you need to create the destination directory first.

e.g. if you want to extract to c:\recovered

Make a new folder on C: partiton and name it recovered
