Just out of curiosty wouldent formating the main drive that has the current OS on it cause your system to shut down and not do anything
or get a bllue screen or a softrware error ?

Formatting your system drive would indeed render your computer inoperable, but it won't prevent you installing another operating system.

It is your BIOS settings that decides the boot order and providing it is set up to boot from your CD/DVD drive all you need do is insert your Windows DVD, reboot and watch for the prompt to tap any keyboard key to boot into your Windows DVD.

At this stage, it doesn't matter whether anything is on your hard drive or whether it's just a blank drive, you'll be able to install Windows on it.

I would first check if that disk is bad or the iso is bad. Is it a readymade disk or a home-burnt one?

Back up your files externally, make your Recovery Disks so you have a path back to factory condition, or save a Backup Image of the entire HD first. Back up installed drivers from windows/system32/drivers, run an audit of installed hardware and software including keys using Belarc Advisor. Gather your program installers.

Boot the Windows 7 installer, choose Custom Install, then Drive Options (Advanced) to Delete all partitions not needed, following illustrated steps given here: Clean Install Windows 7.

If you Delete all partitions to create New ones and Format, the installer will issue a 100mb System Reserved boot partition which conveniently places the Repair Console (normally only on the DVD or Repair CD) on the F8 Advanced Boot Options menu. Partition as you wish and Format before installing to first OS partition.

The installer is mostly driver-complete, with newer arriving quickly via optional Windows Updates. Just in case, have your Wireless driver on flash stick or CD so you can get online quickly. Then enable hardware driver auto-updating and check for optional Updates frequently.

Any drivers still missing in Device Manager can be found on the Support Downloads webpage for your model computer or device. Driver Install - Device Manager

Install updates and then programs slowly over time to gauge performance changes after each. Don't let any programs write themselves into msconfig>Startup as they slow startup, become freeloaders on your RAM/CPU and can spy on you. I only allow AV and gadgets. Startup Programs - Change

Use a lightweight free AV like MS Security Essentials which works perfectly with Windows 7 Firewall. http://www.microsoft.com/security_essentials/

When it is finished, clean and order the HD perfectly using state-of-the-art free CCleaner Disk and Registry tabs, then Puran boot-time defragger + full Disk Check after adding Intelligent Optimizer on Additional Operations tab:
CCleaner - Free software downloads and software reviews - CNET Download.com
http://download.cnet.com/Puran-Defra...-75115626.html

Finally save a Windows 7 Backup image externally so you never have to reinstall again, just reimage the HD (or replacement) using DVD/Repair CD with the stored image. Backup Complete Computer - Create an Image Backup

How to Upgrade to Windows 7 & Migrate Settings

* 1 Download and run Microsoft's Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor to determine if your hardware is capable of running Windows 7. Be sure to turn on all devices that you intend to use with this computer so that the tool can make a complete determination. You can run this on Vista or XP. The Upgrade Advisor will give you a hardware compatibility report. Carefully look over this report to see if you need to resolve any issues before installing Windows 7. Visit the Windows 7 Compatibility Center for information on what will work with Windows 7.

* 2 Back up your system so that if something goes wrong, you can recover your data and applications. Although the Microsoft tool works quite well, it is important to remember that things can happen to derail your upgrade/migration, such as a power outage.

* 3 Insert the Windows 7 install media if you are running an upgradable version of Windows Vista. When you see the "Install Windows" page, click "Install now." If your computer is connected to the Internet, get the latest updates. Accept the license terms and click "Next." When presented with the install options, select "Upgrade." The Windows 7 install procedure will preserve your data, applications and settings so that you will not need to re-install them. Skip to Step 5.

* 4 Save your files and settings on another computer, USB drive, external hard drive or a network share if you are running Windows XP or a version of Vista that cannot be upgraded. Install Windows 7 on your computer. Click "Start" and type "Easy Transfer" in the search box. Click on "Windows Easy Transfer" in the "Results" box. Provide confirmation or an administrator password if prompted. Windows 7 will now transfer your files and settings.

* 5 Reshare your shared printers. Click "Start" and "Devices and Printers." Locate the printer you want to share, and right-click on it. Click "Printer properties," and on the "Sharing" tab, select "Share this printer." Click "OK."

Make your Recovery Disks so you have another method for Factory Recovery in case it won't run from boot: Toshiba HDD Recovery Utility

Now boot the Win7 DVD, select Custom install, use Drive Options to format install partition, start Install.

Proceed with these illustrated Steps: Clean Install Windows 7

If you receive the failure or error again, post back the exact step where it happens and the exact wording of error message.
