help!!!

Hi

hopefully one of you far more intellegent people on here may be able to offer me some advice.

My eldest son seems to have knackered my desktop.........for whatever reason it seems he was removing some entries from the registry, not really knowing what he was doing....related to some signmaking software.

On reboot, the PC seems to boot up ok but the screen just stays black with a white cursor.

Downloaded a windows 7 repair disk but even though set to boot from it, just seems to go straight past it and into normal boot and to the black screen

any solutions other than a complete reinstall?

Run a system restore. Boot from the repair disk and in system recovery options choose system restore.

Choose a restore point before the registry was mangled.

You need to set the boot order in the bios for the computer to boot from cd-rom first. Alternatively, insert the cd in the tray/slot, restart and tap F9 or F12 repeatedly (the key differs from brand to brand) to invoke the one time boot menu, choose cd drive here.

Hi Steve, welcome to the forums. Try putting your installation DVD in and allow it to boot from it. As part of the installation you can choose startup repair. There are excellent tutorials here at Seven Forums....here's the one for you if you need it....Good luck!!

If the system is unable to boot from the CD, chances are that you don't have the CD/DVD player set as the first boot device in the BIOS. Registry problems shouldn't have anything to do with booting from a CD.

Burn the Repair CD with ImgBurn at 4x speed to be sure.

You can also use the one-time BIOS Boot Menu key given on first boot screen.

Accept any offered repair. If Win7 doesn't start, run Startup Repair which should automate System Restore. If not, run it manually from the Tool list.
